98 tahoe 2wd 2dr fuel tank.

ok stupid thing here. Can you tell me how the fuel tank actually mounts. I mean i know that it used straps and slips in a bracket at the front and bolts up in the back but are all the attachment points on the frame or body or both?

The guy who i bought it from raised the tank and the straps fronts are on the body and the bolts are on the back but i have no clue if this is thee way they mount from the factory. Here are a few pics.

It was just frame. The front and back ends mounted to cross-members #11 and 12 in the drawing below.

Ok think i have this figured out, but i can use a fuel tank from a 94-99 tahoe as long as it is a 2wd 2door right? and then just get the sending unit to match. I can find 94-97 all day long in the salvage yard but no 98-99.

Most likely not as there was a change to the tank I think to accommodate a tank pressure sensor.

1997 Tahoe 2 door uses a GM51A metal fuel tank( 30 gallons with two vents). I just had to change my tank,fuel sender and pump in my 97 due to corrosion causing leaks/raw gas smell when full. GM design uses two soft pads, about an 1/8 inch thick,6 inches tall by 18 inches wide around the top of the tank which capture moisture and crap and accelerates corrosion and rotting thru.
The two straps slip into two slots on the crossmember marked 11 and bolt up to the nutserts on crossmenber 12. Straps, bolts and the nutserts are readily available.
Sorry for my rant here.

1998 and 1999 use a GM51B metal fuel tank(30 gallons no vents)
Search for GM51B and you can find them for around $100.

Well the gm51c is what fits the 98-99 tahoe. The gm51b fits a wider variety of applications but the price difference is about 6$ more for the gm51c. The reason i asked the question was to try and find a used tank from a yard cheaper. I can but 94-97 tanks and sending units all day long for about 50$. Its hard to come by a specific 98-99 used in a yard that is 2dr.

But again thank you very much for the info. I had not even looked at the gm51b until now.

The sender resistance changed in 1998 as well. If you use a 1997 tank or earlier your fuel gauge won't read correctly. Your ECM isn't going to know what to do with the fuel level reading either; what problems that may cause I'm unsure of. The sender module from a 98/99 won't fit in the 97 and earlier tanks. Different diameter hole...

Well I guess I should also put this out there it is a 6.0 swap with all aftermarket gauges along with a complete aftermarket wiring harness and a new complete wiring harness for the entire vehicle. A 21 circuit wiring harness will be used. The engine harness will be completely stand alone. So this means that no wiring will go from the ecm to the gauges.
