yep you will need a scanner that can talk to that module. it is gm proprietary so usually the more expensive scanners or the tech2 are the only ones that can talk to it. it is not an obd 1 or 2 protocol.

I had the same problem, pull the panel for the switch from the dash and check the small connector on the left side. They get kinked and it causes connection problems, try straightening it out a little and and make sure before reinstalling it that it has sufficient room behind it so it doesn't kink again... and if it is kinked and causing connectivity issues it will cause the service 4wd light to come on.
