Hey everyone, new to this FORUM.... I'm hoping to get some correct information about the rear subwoofer.
I have 02 Yukon XL (Non BOSE) system with the single subwoofer in the drivers rear.
I'm looking for now just to replace the rear subwoofer. I've heard it's a 10" , then I've heard it's an 8". Bigger question is that I also heard that whatever sub I put in will need to be 2ohms instead of 4 because that's what's supplying it currently. I'm just looking to replace the sub. No other problems with stereo system. I bought this used and have restored the powertrain, so now it's time for the stereo. There was a dvd system in there, but that is gone too at this time. Any help would be appreciated. Want to get the right sub for it. Not looking to get an amp. THANKS!!!!!

I have a Kicker 8 inch DVC sub in mine. Had to sand the edge/ring some to get it to fit though.

Polk Audio MM840 8" subwoofer

I don't think you will be satisfied with the upgrade of subwoofer alone. The factory speakers are so dumb, once you upgrade your sub, you will be thinking upgrade everything else. So, draw a big picture, and do it step by step. The subwoofer should be the one close to the last steps, it should match your main speakers.

Here is my subwoofer story. I used to have a JL 8W0 (I don't exactly remember the model), but found it didn't match the factory enclosure well. After studying the enclosure design with WinISD, I picked Polk MM840, because it matched both my Focal main speaker sensitivity and the factory enclosure design. The result is very satisfied (not comparing to 12", no cargo space sacrificed here). I suggest everyone should try this freeware before they make a decision.

After I received the MM840, I found its outside diameter is about 1/8" larger than the opening. So, Dremel was on the call

Fitted in finally, don't forget put some Acousta-Stuf Polyfill in, it really makes your enclosure acoustically "bigger"

Put some mat behind it

Actually, I put Dynamat around the enclosure later on, but couldn't notice the difference. I thought about put some fiber glass thing around it, but got lazy. I was pleased with the bass anyway.

Bumping this thread to the top for the benefit of another forum member here (SuedePflow), who tried two different but very well known and respected brands (MB Quart and Rockford Fosgate) of subwoofer drivers in a factory YXL enclosure with unsatisfactory results.

The fact that Yukonese also tried a well known brand of subwoofer, JL Audio no less, in the GM OEM enclosure and experienced unsatisfactory results as well, cannot be ignored.

Yukonese found a software program to analyze the enclosure design, and subsequently chose a different driver by Polk Audio because it "matched both (his) Focal main speaker sensitivity and the factory enclosure design", based on the results of the software analysis he used.

Interesting, don't you think?

Yeah I would purchase a twelve inch Rockford and the speaker is only as good as the amp pushing it, You could have a $1200 Rockford being pushed by Kmart special MTX 1200 watt amp it would sound like crap now if you switched It around a Installed a cheap MTX speaker and have it powered my a rock ford 12pp watt amp and it would sound good because power drives the qyality. You may have a great speaker but if you font have the king push it doesn't mean anything

That is very interesting.

How does one know what a "quality amp" is? In my limited experience, neither brand nor price have been reliable indicators of quality.

Brand and price are functions of marketing. Presumably, specifications are functions of a product's predicted effectiveness, but even specifications don't tell the whole story.

And then there is buying more amp than one needs for a particular purpose... and the purpose here is to drive an 8" subwoofer in a sealed enclosure not bigger than 1/3 of a cubic foot.

In another thread, SuedePFlow had a 300W Mono Rockford Fosgate amp. If Rockford Fosgate is considered a "good quality" brand, then that makes it all the more confusing as to why he had such unsatisfactory results with the Rockford Fosgate P3 sub that he tried with it... from the same manufacturer no less.

It seems like a hit and miss chance of luck to find any given speaker and any given amp to be well matched to each other.

The quality of the amp is imprinted in the instructions by the Ohms and the clarity and cleanliness of the power being distributed.

When your done with the install is there any chance you could send me the dimensions of your box because I have a Speaker and amp in my 1985 Cutlass Supreme that bent the mounting hinges on the trunk and knocked off the rear view mirror off. I had 2 12" audiophiles which require small boxes to sound great but if you give them a lot of space they really bump. Im only going to use one in that small area so it looks factory. Thank you

Here is the progress I made on my attempt at a fiberglass box in the suburban/ yukon XL factory spot. After all of this I changed my mind and decided to do a center console instead. should give you a visual though.

Wow! YukonXL04, most people say that a thread is useless without pictures...

But in this case, your pictures are begging for an explanation!

What stopped you in your tracks? What did you learn, after getting that far into it, that made you fold up the tent back up and go rent a cabin instead?
