Thinking about turning the 97 into the tow rig. 6.0 LS 4L80E 8 lug axles

You know that will have nothing to do with actual towing ratings, correct?
If staying under the 1500 tow ratings, but just wanting to swap for more stability, just add air bags.

I want to swap for bigger brakes. Better power and stronger axle. I’m surrounded by mountains so if I want to take the boat camping I can’t count on what I have now.

Understood. I can't remember the forum, but I've seen people do the swap.
Does your boat have trailer brakes?

Yes, 4wheel disc surge brakes. I’ve got all new brakes on the Tahoe. Slotted drilled rotors. New calipers. New master. All new rears. Trailer brakes are also new. There are times when I feel like if I needed to stop faster I wouldn’t be able to. Going back up those hill after a long day on the water that 4L60e has to pull about a 3 mile steep grade at 35.
