08 tahoe gauges go crazy

just bought a very used 08 Tahoe with 254xxxmiles. Runs great and just did a 2000mi trip in it this weekend with no problems. The one major annoyance is the gauge cluster does not work very often. All gauges quit at the same time. The PRNDL, message center, and all backlighting work properly all the time. Just opening the door with the vehicle off makes the gauges jump around and make noise. I know they had stepper motor problems in these clusters but assume that it would only affect that one particular gauge? Made for a long trip glancing at the phone all the time to check speed, since the cruise does not work either. (I already changed the brake switch and checked for correct/burnt bulbs with no luck). Any ideas on where to start would be great. Have an autel bidirectional scanner to check things if that helps
