Torque converter failure $3898 repair quote

Hello All,
So last weekend I felt my tranny slip in my 2010 tahoe(93,000 miles). I took it in to a shop that specializes in transmissions to have them diagnose the issue. They found that the torque converter failed and metal went through the entire transmission burning up clutches clogging the tcm etc. I was quoted $3898 to replace all the clutches install a hd torque converter as well as put in a new tcm and clean out all of the lines. I am just wondering if this sounds reasonable. I am pretty pissed that this happened as I had the trans cooling line replaced about 2 months ago and the mechanic didn't refill the fluid to the proper level causing the issue. I was also quoted $4100 in parts alone if I wanted a new transmission.

Shop around. My local Atco shop quoted me $2400 for rebuilding my Trans. Hopefully your guy isn't the only game in town. I you can remove it yourself you may be able to find a shop that will do an exchange for much cheaper.

find another shop, new trans from gm is only around $2500 (after core charge)if you can do it yourself....

I spent 2200 on a full rebuild for mine in April. And that's in California where everything is more expensive. I think that shop sounds like a rip off. Shop around a bit.

Why would they replace the TCM?

Sounds shady, find another shop.

Well I'd try the cheapest route 1st. Trans system flush and maybe an additive. It may work

A flush will not work. When the valve body (the device that controls the hydraulics in the transmission), the clutch pistons, the gears and bearings, the torque convertor and pump etc. get contaminated with particles, there is no way a flush is going to clean out all of those little passageways. It is hard enough to clean out the tranny cooler to prevent contaminating the new tranny.

Continue to price torque convertor, transmission from GM and installation.

The TCM cannot be contaminated or damaged by a blown tranny. It is an electronic device.

I'm surprised they didn't tell you, "You're gonna need a new rear end too cuz all those shavings went down the drive shaft."
Look for a rebuilt trans and ask some buddies to help. Good Saturday project.
