View Full Version : Best Exhaust System????

Rivieraracing

My boss and I are looking for the best exhaust system out there (not just a muffler necessarily) for our trucks to not just improve the sound quality but are really looking for the best performance out of it. I have a '02 denali 6.0 and he has a '04 GMC 2500 with I think either the 5.3 or 6.0 (not sure).
Neither one of us want the obnoxiously loud setup but would like a good deep tone with a little attitude to go with it. So....... catback or not, magnaflow, flowmaster, borla.....etc?????

Well, you need to keep in mind that the biggest restrictions to the stock setup are the muffler and cats. Really, for performance all you need is a good replacement muffler. But you said you wanted to go with a fully system, sooo...

Gibson makes a good product that isn't obnoxiously loud, as does Magnaflow and Corsa. But, since I'm cheap and I'm only doing a flowmaster 50 series on my rig, I can't help you with actual comparisons...just what I've read.

Well, actually, I am after whatever will make the most out of a custom tune, I already have the CAI just want to invest on the best exhaust setup to make some good power without being obnoxious loud!! Trying to get all my ducks in a row when it comes to upgrades for when I get on the waiting list for the blackbear tune.
So Rollin Thunder, what do you mean by "ftmfw"?

I dont think 3/4 ton comes with 5.3. 6.0 is smallest engine i believe. I think getting rid of the cat or guttin it would help exhaust flow tons. Then a high flow muffler, I had a Flowmaster on my 2k z71, sounded nice at idle and under normal driving and barked when you got on it. It was a cat back system. Gonna wait till my warranty runs out on my 06 denali before I stert tweakin it tho.

The stock cats actually flow really well!

So Jenna Bear, are you saying that just a muffler of the ones you listed would be more than sufficient, or a catback system of those? Also, which of the 5 would be the most mellow tone of them? I love my denali because it has lots of power but it doesn't sound like a NASCAR!!

WOW, corsa is some spendy exhaust!! Do you have that system on your truck Rollin? All I can find of them is there catback system on Summit, but I do like the stainless system over conventional!

Not on any of my current trucks. But had one on my 06 and it was bad ass.

The stock cats are ok but the crossover pipe and y are junk I hve the magnaflow mid pipe with high flow cats (304SS) JBA shortys (304SS) and of course the volant 304 cat back

How about that Flowmaster 44? It just sounds like a mean SOB man....even with dynamat under the truck I don't think I could take that much noise!

will i get the same results as a full corsa system if i just replace only the stock muffler with a corsa muffler and whatever runs to the tips?

The muffler is your biggest concern - it's the most restrictive part. If you just want to free up a little power, replace the muffler. The stock piping is good enough to support TONS of power. If you wanna drop the extra loot on a full system, go ahead...but you don't need to. You probably won't see any benefits from a catback that you can't get with just the muffler.

Jenna, when you say Corsa>Borla>Magnaflow>Gibson>Flowmaster, are you referring to your preference, sound, performance...?

I want a flowmaster 50 series, but I don't like being at the bottom of the list lol.

I think it's performance, flowmaster is a chambered muffler....so more restrictive

Some of these companies only sell catback systems. Honestly, in going from a Magnaflow to a Corsa, there is quite a difference in the two. You get what you pay for that is for sure. There is no drone and is very mellow until you get into the throttle.

There is no disadvantage to using the stock piping and just replacing the muffler.

I too have Magnaflow cats, but really it is only because I have a fully modified system from the heads back. The factory Y is plenty to support my blower with 10psi. I don't suggest folks spend their $$$ on cats, they flow better than most performance cars out on the market.

will i get the same results as a full corsa system if i just replace only the stock muffler with a corsa muffler and whatever runs to the tips?

The only mufflers (with the exception of buying a one off from someone) that Corsa sells are the DB series. All of their systems come as a complete catback.

In our experience, the Flowmasters don't allow as much performance due to their chambered construction. A complete "flow through" muffler will give you the best performance. If you are wanting a very throaty sound, then yes, I suggest the Flowmaster. Really, it is all about the sound that you want, as the HP is rather negligible.

This falls into the "which is better Coke or Pepsi, McDonalds or Wendys" category of threads......exhaust sound is subjective

Dr. Pepper and Wendy's.

I agree. We need to have an exhaust sound bite sticky on this site. Forum members could post up videos or sound bytes of different exhaust setups to help others choose.

I am part of svtperformance.com (I used to own a cobra) and the exhaust thread was a huge hit. I'd love to see it hear as I cannot find many exhaust vids on youtube.

correct me if im wrong, but it sounds like i can buy one of these "db series" mufflers, put it on my stock system, and get the same sound/performance as if rollin thunder spent alot of moolah on the full catback system, or no?

Yes sir, that is correct. They sound slightly different from the normal Corsa mufflers, I think there are a few clips up on YouTube.

No windows were down. The Magnaflow was much louder than the Corsa. The headers and intake made it even louder. Can't hear the Corsa at cruise.

Now that is what I wanna hear, no drone at cruise!!! Where is the best place to get just a Corsa muffler online, all I have found so far is just the whole exhaust?

---------- Post added at 09:57 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:41 AM ----------

Basically if I could get a muffler with better flow with the same quiet sound at cruise and not sounding like a NASCAR all the time, I would love it but I know that isn't possible, I really do like the quiet powerful denali!!
If Corsa is the best choice for my preference, then that works for me, just wanna help performance some without sacrificing quiet sound quality!!

Thanks for the name of them JennaBear, does anyone know where I can order one? Also, the datalogging that I would do if I got your cable to get my truck programmed, how much for how long should I drive my truck to get an accurate reading for your tune? A couple of 30 minute commutes to my work? Highway and/or city driving?

As much variable driving as possible. A few WOT pulls, getting on freeway, stoplights, cruising. Just drive pretty much! :Handshake:

i wish i knew myself, im wanting to do the same thing, get a corsa muffler and put it on my stock system, i dont want to get the db series mufflers

the only thing is i dont think you can get them in 3in if running a single exhaust. for i denalli you could prob run two 2 1/2 mufflers and run true duals since they dont come with a "y pipe" into a single.

Thanks for the help Screamin86, I looked on Jegs today but didn't exactly find that spot on there, a step in the right direction but I am thinking I am going to be looking for the red series of the 2, looking for the quietier of the 2!!

Yes, I have heard that the DBs are not "built" by Corsa just sold by them as well. But take that FWIW as I don't have confirmation on it.
