The Adventures of Sylvester, the 2018 Suburban 3500 HD and our 2017 Airstream 27FB

I’m nothing if not OCD, so I’ve had it sitting in front of the house while I researched, purchased and installed storage solutions for the whole camper. I can’t stand it when there are things that don’t have a ‘place’ where they belong because it causes clutter. After that, I installed a...

Any regrets not getting a Suburban/XL instead of Tahoe/Yukon?

Precisely. For us, the benefits of the longer wheelbase far outweigh any drawbacks in real-life situations. I can always find another parking spot, but I can't make more interior space when I need it. And the longer wheelbase is much better for towing stability, which we do often.

Any regrets not getting a Suburban/XL instead of Tahoe/Yukon?

2 Yukon XL’s and a Suburban here. 2 kids, big dog, in-laws, kids’ friends. We use the extra space. All. The. Time. I can’t count the number of times I’ve said a gratitude to myself for the extra space as we’re loading up to go somewhere.

The Adventures of Sylvester, the 2018 Suburban 3500 HD and our 2017 Airstream 27FB

Got a little more progress done this week. Got the new converter installed and it was only delivering about 2/3 the amps that it should be to the battery, but I found the bottleneck. The factory positive bus bar was getting hot to the touch with only 30A running through it. So I bypassed it and...

Yeah, it’s really well laid out. I guess that goes with the same company building RVs for 80 years.

The Adventures of Sylvester, the 2018 Suburban 3500 HD and our 2017 Airstream 27FB

Got the bed out and the compartment under it ready for wiring and swearing. Spent a good hour just sitting in there looking at the factory wiring, inverter, buss wires and junction box to make sure I understood every nuance. The factory positive buss bar is actually a set of 4 self-resetting...

The Adventures of Sylvester, the 2018 Suburban 3500 HD and our 2017 Airstream 27FB

The battery came yesterday. Jeebus it's a big one, but thankfully it only weighs about 55 lbs. A lead-acid battery capable of delivering a full 300 amp hours would be twice as big and weigh 4x as much. Also, 10' of 4/0 AWG pure copper wire cost me $90. It's insane how expensive everything has...

That's super helpful insight - especially on the DC-to-DC charger. Thank you. This may be more info than you care to know, so I'm just laying it out here - more to memorialize it for myself and in case others see it and are also headed down the solar path. I've been researching for weeks and...

BREAKING: GM is officially recalling the L87

If only there had been data about what buyers actually want, that they could've used to determine that the market isn't ready for EV trucks in profitable volumes. Oh wait...

What to look for and avoid in buying a used 2015-2020

One more thing to add to what's already been said. One of the other weak links is the A/C condenser coil in front of the radiator. There is a fatigue point where the lines go in that will eventually start leaking, followed by the loss of A/C cooling for the interior. The fix is to replace the...

    Hello from wild windy Wyoming

Welcome! There are lots of folks here who know how to help you do that - myself included. If it helps, I tow either a 7500 lb conventional camper or a 6700 lb Airstream with both our 2012 Yukon XL Denali and our 2018 Suburban 3500 HD, and have spent a lot of time on modifications to the former...

    Chevrolet Suburban 3500 Questions

Gotcha. Then I would tend to agree. My sense is that most tuners tune for performance with a limited understanding of either the weaknesses of a given platform, or the implications of their tuning choices on durability/longevity. Justin has built his business on doing both by finding that sweet...

New 2005 Yukon XL 2500 SLT 8.1 Owner - Colorado

Welcome to the 8-lug club! That's a beautiful, rust-free unicorn with that 8.1. That's the closest thing to an 'heirloom-quality' vehicle made in the last 50 years. One thing worth doing immediately is to change the plastic coolant tees at the firewall if they haven't been done recently. And...

    Chevrolet Suburban 3500 Questions

Yes, but only from tuners who don’t know the 6L80/90 as well as Justin does at blackbear. I’m at 251,000 right now on what I believe is the original 6L80 in my 2007. I’m not 100% sure, but I have no record of it being rebuilt in the Carfax, or in any of the other records that came with the car.

The Suburban has been slumbering in the garage, waiting for fall camping season to begin. Trips planned to Shenandoah, Williamsburg and the Outer Banks through November. I’ll do an oil change this week, have the front diff and transfer case done, and probably the transmission, too. Meanwhile...

    Anyone here off-road their Yukon?

That trail looks a lot like one out there called Metal Masher. Very hard to get through that one with a long body Yukon without at least some body/wheel damage, I would think. I did it in a stock LR3 with a group of Land Rovers, and we were the only rig to get out without at least some...

    Anyone here off-road their Yukon?

I love the Alpine Loop - Engineer Pass especially. I did it the first time in the '99 Isuzu Rodeo I had at the time, and it did fine. Then later in our old '07 Land Rover LR3 which felt like luxury with air suspension and factory front, center, and rear electronic lockers. Then finally in our...

2011 Suburban 2500 Rear Axle Swap

So glad you found a great solution! That first situation sounded shady AF. I would've done the same. And settling that bill would be the last money they'd ever receive from me.

2013 Escalade noise: AC compressor or engine...?

Sure enough! I'll bet the cam is damaged also. Could've been a bit of debris squeezed between the cam and roller that started the spalling, but that looks like bad metallurgy to me.

[SOLVED] 2013 Escalade ESV no comms ECM, TCM

My next step would be to reconnect everything to where they belong, leaving the negative battery cable until the very end. But before you put the negative battery cable back on the battery post, pull the positive cable off the battery and touch the positive and negative battery cables together...

    Radiator Fan Questions

And the plot thickens... Just for fun, I dug out the leftover 700W motor I pulled from the previous fan shroud when I threw it away, and measured it. I had replaced one of the motors with a 700W one to see if it would be enough to make a difference, before I bought the whole Dorman assembly (it...
