    Build thread - LMG 5.3 to L96 6.0 swap

That was the plan for sure but the files just ended up being so different from each other. Many tables had different axes and scaling. One would have fuel flow rates in grams/sec, other would be lbs/hour. Just a lot of stuff like that. Would have been a lot of work in excel converting things...

    Build thread - LMG 5.3 to L96 6.0 swap

Finally to the 90-95% satisfaction level on the tune. It's been a journey. Tuner and I spent a lot of time trying to get the L77 tune to work because of the mismatch with ECM and Op Sys between the L96 trucks and my LMG Tahoe. If there's one thing someone with plans for this same swap can...

Squeaky pass side front suspension - SOLVED

New upper control arms installed and all is well - no squeak. Need to get it in for an alignment next week. Thanks to all for the input. And thanks to the mod that added the "SOLVED" to my thread title. I was waiting until I actually installed the parts and got it back on the road for that...

Squeaky pass side front suspension - SOLVED

Finally diagnosed the cause - upper ball joint. I took it to Firestone since I was convinced it was the frame-to-upper arm bushings, and I thought they needed to be re-torqued with the weight of the vehicle on them. They diagnosed it as the upper ball joint though. Took it home and sure...

Squeaky pass side front suspension - SOLVED

Well, yesterday I swapped struts per @mikez71 suggestion. Same noise, still on PS. So, it's not the struts. I'm about 95% certain it's the control arm bushings. They may have been torqued in the wrong position. When I did front end rebuild, I installed all the front suspension components...

Squeaky pass side front suspension - SOLVED

Did that - no effect. I was hoping that was it, since it's the easiest thing to take care of! They're Monroe quick struts. You could be right, it does seem to be coming from the strut. I'll probably try my wash thing one more time, then pull that strut. Then I'll decide if I do the clean...

Squeaky pass side front suspension - SOLVED

2013 Tahoe LT 4x4. As title says I'm getting an annoying front suspension squeak going over bumps at low speed and, to a lesser extent when steering at low speed. All front suspension components are no more than 1.5 years old/10k miles: struts, sway bar d-bushings and end links, tie rods...

    Build thread - LMG 5.3 to L96 6.0 swap

Update on the tune situation. Still running the 2013 Caprice PPV, L77, tune file. It's about as good as it's going to get. Had a few cycles with the tuner and a few issues to resolve. But now I can drive it consistently and not get a CEL and it's behaving fairly well, for using a tune from a...

    Build thread - LMG 5.3 to L96 6.0 swap

Been a while since I've posted, and I haven't done any work on the tune for the last week plus - family stuff - HS graduation, picking up another kid from college, etc. Heading back out to see the tuner this afternoon, tho. This will be an interim tune - basically the fueling parameters for...

    Build thread - LMG 5.3 to L96 6.0 swap

Yep, they have the same OS issue as the pickups. But another option tuner and I discussed was replacing whole ECM with one from a van. I was messing around with AI and found that although most of the vans had 6l90 trans there were some that had a 6l80. But with a different ECM you still have...

    Build thread - LMG 5.3 to L96 6.0 swap

Yep exactly what he’s going to do with tunercat. And yes, “time consuming” were the exact words he used too.

Different operating system. It sounds like it’s vey difficult/impossible to get them to work with a different OS. Probably also wouldn’t work with BCM and TCM.

    Build thread - LMG 5.3 to L96 6.0 swap

Ok time for some tuning talk. My tuner used a base file from a 2013 L77. L77 is an aluminum 6.0 block used in that era of Caprice PPV (and some Holden cars) – 10.4 CR, with AFM, but no VVT. Although HP and torque are similar, it’s a bit different than my iron block L96 – 9.6 CR, no AFM but with...

Yep, I'm going to do some testing and see if there is 5v where expected before I jumper anything. Thanks for the input. (pun intended!)

    exhausting question

If you want just a "little louder than stock" I went with the big Magnaflow: 5x11 oval, 22" long. I also eliminated the rear resonator and put a stainless tip on it. I like a little rumble at idle and the throaty roar when I get on it, but I abhor the 1800-2200 rpm drone. So far the big...

    Build thread - LMG 5.3 to L96 6.0 swap

I work with a bunch of electrical engineers (I'm a civil) and I was talking to one of them today about that sensor and its wiring diagram. We're thinking that, yes, it's variable so you get a range of temps, but the input to the oil level pin just needs to have a voltage (1-5v?). To put it...

    Build thread - LMG 5.3 to L96 6.0 swap

Excellent, thank you! So does that mean I can jumper pins 33 (oil level switch signal) and 24 (low reference) to provide the signal?

    Build thread - LMG 5.3 to L96 6.0 swap

Thanks much. Both tuner and I were doing research after I posted this and we both came to same conclusion that BCM is involved. Pinout list for E38 ECM Looks like pin 33 on X2 connector is for oil level warning. Definitely no expert, but I'm assuming that when oil level is OK, switch...

Here’s the screen from engine data in tech 2 that shows the warning is being triggered.

Tuner sent me this pic - it’s the screen in TunerCat that shows oil level warning is disabled.

    Build thread - LMG 5.3 to L96 6.0 swap

It runs! I’ll post up a video later, but I have an immediate issue I'm trying to solve. I'm getting a "Low oil level - add oil" warning in the DIC. Problem is, neither my old LMG nor the new L96 have oil level sensors. My tuner uses TunerCAT. He needed to find a similar 6.0 that uses the...

    Build thread - LMG 5.3 to L96 6.0 swap

Thanks guys, yes I definitely had to pull the TC forward when bolting it to the flex plate so I think I’m good. I’m not sure what the initial weirdness was all about, but not going to fret about it. Engine turns over fine now with TC bolted to it

    Build thread - LMG 5.3 to L96 6.0 swap

Hmmm you do have me a little concerned but I think I’m al right. I honestly didn’t even try to rotate the TC at that point. After bell housing was fully seated against engine, I tried rotating the engine at the balancer, not the TC. Engine didn’t seem to want to move at all, and then I...

    Build thread - LMG 5.3 to L96 6.0 swap

Tonight got the exhaust all buttoned up, front driveshaft installed (I disconnected u-joint for extra room) and intake manifold in place, but not torqued down and nothing up top connected yet. Have to review all my disassembly pics for connections and hose/harness routing.
