From a very reputable industry source on another forum, there is a very high likelihood of oil shortages on the near horizon due to the confilct with Iran. This post IS NOT to discuss the political nature of that conflict, rather to give fellow forum members a source for oil availability for our rigs and at discounts which soon will likely disappear, followed by significant price hikes at best, or at worst, extreme lack of product.

I’ll start: for those with 6.2L engines between 2021 and 2024 that had the oil weight change after the pico test recall, Walmart has our spec oil on sale with free delivery (European Car Formula 0W-40) and there's a $10 rebate through Mobil:

Walmart has buy one get one free plus 4$ bonus (After rebate 30$)
don't forget to use your rewards credit card(be sure to pay it in full )

5w30 for the NNBS/NBS API SQ

0w20 for other modern cars

So ... much [most?] "synthetic" oil is still actually just highly processed natural petroleum, even stuff marketed as "full synthetic". Correct?
Pretty much yes, only Group IV synthetic oils are 100% lab synthesized, so a Group III/Group IV blend would not be 100% full synthetic.
I had thought the boundary between them was much sharper.
Until Castrol successfully argued to loosen the definition of 'synthetic oil', you were absolutely right.

Not quite my favorite motor oil, but at that price I'm very seriously considering giving Valvoline Restore & Protect a break.
Pennzoil's PureBase is fully Group IV synthetic, root ingredients are natural gases; side benefit is physical/chemical impurities are almost nil to start with.

If only there were a 0W30 instead of 0W20 ...

NYC, don't remember it ever getting that cold, although on the coldest windiest winter nights, the wind chill gets that low every winter for a few weeks.

Upstate NY, quite another story, depending on altitude. Since I spend time in upstate NY, NJ, CT PA, and occasionally further north, wanna come prepared.

There will be NO oil shortage. Relax, go somewhere and have a nice lunch.

It's click bait. The fear mongering will continue untill you submit to the new world order. Bog brother knows what is best for you.

I don't think Bog Brother generates much of this flood of clickbait. He's definitely the target of a bunch of it though.

I read that full synthetics are gonna suffer shortages because of this.

Can y'all tell me how natural shortages are gonna cause synthetic shortages; other than people just switching to synthetic because their natural source dries up? That was not the flavor of the story.

I'm leaning toward 'clickbait story' so far.

joe
You might want to Google the difference between regular motor oil and synthetic. You should find it quite interesting. Plus, there is no standard definition for synthetic oil.

You guys are missing the whole point of this thread: post oil deals for the forum masses to hedge bets on oil availability or potential price increases deeply impacting our ability to properly maintain our rigs. While you’re “somewhere having a nice lunch,” stop
along the way and buy another oil change’s worth of oil. Or two. Or don’t since this is click bait.

Also be sure to smash that subscribe button and click the bell for notifications. Or don’t- since I have no vested interest to drive you to some social media circle-jerk.

Also remember: THE INTERNET IS SERIOUS BUSINESS! :rotflmao:

I think he got the point just fine. I think he just considers it void.

Of course, you're the guy who didn't like my asking for definition clarification.

Remember the toilet paper shortage rumor that caused panic and massive toilet paper sales that then actually caused a toilet paper shortage?
Yeah, it's like that.
They aren't very creative so the scripts just keep getting repeated. Stock up on flea and tick collars while you are at it. And for God sake don't forget your booster shot or gramma's won't work.

Shell reports damage to Pearl GTL plant after Iran attack on Qatar LNG hub

Paul Burkhardt, Bloomberg March 19, 2026
(Bloomberg) – Shell Plc’s Pearl gas-to-liquids plant sustained damage in Iran’s attack on the Ras Laffan Industrial City in Qatar on Wednesday, the oil major said.
A fire at the site has been extinguished and the facility is in a “safe state,” Shell said. All essential staff are safe and accounted for and the extent of the damage is being assessed.
Attacks on energy infrastructure have escalated over the past two days, as Iran has targeted some of the Middle East’s most important energy facilities in retaliation for Israel’s strike on its South Pars gas field.
Ras Laffan was one of several locations that Iran said it targeted Wednesday after its South Pars gas field and related assets were attacked.
Shell’s Pearl GTL plant refines as much as 1.6 billion cubic feet of wellhead gas from offshore wells into as much as 140,000 barrels a day of fuel, including gasoil, kerosene and base oil, along with petrochemical feedstock.
The attacks on Pearl GTL caused “extensive damage,” QatarEnergy said in a separate statement. There were also missile attacks on several of the company’s liquefied natural gas facilities that caused “sizable fires and extensive further damage.”

There are a few GF-6A oils made FROM natural gas.. the supply chain ran dry on these three/four weeks ago.. i bought up as many as i could.

Shell.. owns pennzoil and quaker state and several others.. New bottles have different labeling…

To many… this is not even meaningful.. but if you use pennzoil.. you get a different oil if you were using the 5w30 made from nat gas…

Finally somebody posted the real reason much of the synthetic oil availability is becoming scarce. The Qatar Shell plant does supply a lot of base oil for synthetic engine oils. Stays tuned it may be 18 months or more before supply chain is filling back up. Advance and AutoZone have sent memoa to store staff about this issue and may have oil substitute options on their website. Expect to use oils that are different viscosity and approvals if you cannot find what you prefer to use.

This one is very long, but outlines what we are about to deal with for the next 12-24 months would be my guess. One of my go to oils was still available in May, but from the purchase in April to May the price went up 18%, maybe not as high as gasoline, but it has moved quite a bit in a short time.

One of my favorite episodes on “Land Man”
After the pretty female attorney from New York City pulled up in her rental Audi A7 to one of the oil operations and gave her opinion on the environmental issues with fossil fuels.

His response was classic truth and he went on to tell her everything she puts on her face, the car she drove in with, the condo she lives in, the jet she flew in on, her clothes and just about everything we use in modern society comes from oil or was obtained using oil.

For those of you who haven’t seen it I will look for the clip.
It is 100% truth
