I would say yes but I have never not used it. I figure they make them for a reason and I don’t want to get that far to find out. I bought mine from SacCity Corvette years ago. Looks like there are a lot of other options nowadays.
Broken wire in the harness is where I would look. I have found ground and power wires broken in two. Most recently on the DR side. Same symptoms. 3 years ago the ground and then 3 months ago the power.
Remove the top 2 bolts on the housing. Turn your wheel all the way inward and remove the 1 or 2 7mm screws and as many push pin fasteners from the front of the fender liner as you need to get to the bottom 10mm bolt. It would help to have someone hold up the liner when you reach in there. A...
Check your starter. It’s on the passenger side and I’ve seen them make enough contact with the flexplate to cause odd noises. Not usually only when sitting it down though. Easy enough to get under it and check while you have someone shut it off for you.
Without looking I remember there are 2 small hoses. One larger than the other. One is for overflow when you fill up and that directs back to the tank. The other smaller hose is a vent for your rear differential. The vent body is also tucked up there.
That’s the vent part of the unit. Did you drop the spare and look at the valve it runs to? The previous owner may have hooked it up wrong if they didn’t buy a harness and had to splice wires? Maybe they didn’t connect it to the tank properly? You should check all that.
Assuming you have ruled out the gas cap it’s most likely your purge valve or your vent valve. The purge valve is on the passenger side of your intake manifold (AC Delco 214-1865) $22 on Amazon. I replaced that one still got the code after clearing it. It will probably take a few days to pop back...
