Recently, my '05 4.8L Tahoe had an intermittent starting issue. Sometimes when I start the SUV, it would hesitate to start just for a split second but would start normally. I seemed like a weak battery that was starting to die. But the other day at work, when I the same problem occurred, someone noticed there was a spark under the SUV when I started it. I went home and checked under the starter. I didn't see anything wrong with the starter or the connections. I removed the starter heat shield and noticed one of the ears was burned. My guess is the heat shield was causing an arc with the starter terminal. I removed the heat shield and the problem has gone away. Problem solved.

Just sharing this with you all.

I would guess it is more likely a internal problem with the starter developing a short and arc-ing onto the cover, time will tell.........
