rear diff

pulled my diff cover and saw this, a little puzzled how the diff got these marks, also what diff can i replace it with, can i replace the diff without messing with the pinion gears? i saw a diff from jegs someone posted

Pinion nut must have came loose

You may have to reset the gear tooth pattern, new crush sleeve and pinion bearing, but if nothing is broken, you should be fine with that gear set.

the pinion seal is leaking, i haven't heard any grinding noises- do the diff. have anything to do with the gear ratio?
