That was my first thought seeing the pic. The hose from the top should go to the intake. Not sure that would solve an excessive oil catch though.

Second thoughts. I guess it depends on the separator design. A baffle design may come off the side. A demister design would come off top. Open can design would come off top.

I have a Moroso. It is a demister type. Inlet and outlet on opposite sides near top. Flow passes through demister pad. Oil droplets fall into bottom.

Not crazy about the design but the outlet would be the side just as your instructions said. Since the demister pads are so small the design is using gravity and flow direction change (180 degrees) to assist in oil separation.
