Delayed Acceleration

Hey guys ..Sometimes when i push down the pedal a little bit maybe going 20 or 30 mph, i press down the pedal, nothing happens, then i feel a little kick and the car will accelerate. It feels like the response is just very delayed and it seems like a common problem but I dont really know why or what the problem is. any ideas?
