It kicks on and off and does not blow cold. I tried the crappy little recharge thing from the auto store. Do I need to get it charged from someone that can do it by both the high and low port

did the crappy recharge can have a gauge on it? You charge from the low side not the high side. on your dryer it's self is a switch with two wires unplug it use a paper clip and jump across the two female spade terminals in the harness see if the compressor stays on.. you need a gauge to get your low side around 28 to 32 at 1500 rpm when its around 80 outside with a good flow of air across your condenser..

Had the exact same problem... after being in and out of the shop turned out it was a faulty relay. It would get hot and turn itself off.
