What are the minimum requirements to get a 4L60E to hold up to torque of
a mild 454 (78') ?
I plan on a Edlebrock ot Summit Dual Plane Intake / Comp Cams' 268H/
Full Length Headers if they'll fit , and a CD Ign. system ? I figure at that stage better than 400ftlbs .
Gearing is 3:42-1 , and 265/75-16 .

I am not sure what they are rated for but I am running a 383 stroker and I put around 390 torque to the wheels and beat on it pretty good with no issues yet.

I know the 4L65-Es that were in the Hummer H2 could handle about 425hp before they would break. That would be with an updated Sun Shell (stronger) and other components beefed up too.

I'd think you would be better off with a 4L80 or an older Turbo 400.

+1 on the 4L80/TH400 suggestion... TQ breaks more transmissions than HP will and you already know the 454 is designed to have more TQ than the 383. That said, you CAN beef up a 4L60 to handle 400+ TQ/HP, but it'll cost you.

One of my neighbors is part owner of a transmission shop and said that they've got a race car that has a powerglide trans in it holding upwards of 400 - but he stated the trans by itself cost $4k.

+2 on the 4L80E suggestion. You'd be far better off with that behind a 454 than a 4L60E. The 4L60E's have a hard enough time staying behind a stock 5.3 let alone behind a mildly build 454 with all that TQ!! :eek:

EXACTOMUNDO X4 !
4L60E = 330flbs.
"65E" = 360flbs.
"80E" = 385flbs.
I still want the O/Drive so a 400 although a beast is still 1:1 so that's out . The "80E" also requires a dedicated Harness and I believe the PCM is different . A stand alone for an "80E" is very pricey . Damn GM putting gutless tranny's in their rigs !
I wondered if the 60E would take a 383 . I see them rated @ 450flbs. +/- .
Welll, it may be awhile if I need to build a 60E . Maybe head to KC, Mo. and try and score a 65E .
