I'm trying to figure out the same thing as well. I'm toying with 275/70/18 or 285/65/18 and I've hear that the 285 fit without a level because the 22's come on 285's.

I ended up switching to 20's and am running 275/65/20 with 2" leveling kit. No rub.
These are 34.21" OVERALL DIAMETER.
Depending on make and model tire, the 285's you mention should be (+ /-) 32.59" in diameter.
