My father has a 2003 Suburban 1500 4x4. Apparently the rear diff keeps losing fluid. A mechanically adept friend changed out the fluid sometime last year. The reason he did so what that the fluid had gone seriously low. so he opened her up, sealed her up and torqued it down. Does anyone have any idea how it's continuing to lose fluid? Mechanically inclined friend does not live in nearby town. But before we allow the shop or drive to friend to let him do the work it would be nice to know how it's losing fluid. Don't see any obvious fluid leaks (around the seals).

Thanks & Cheers!
Dave

Okay. Dad drove to friend's and after the guys opened it up, they found work to do on the gears. But, it is still a mystery as to WHY there was no fluid left in the case. There was no obvious leak or tell-tale signs of losing fluid anywhere - they couldn't identify anything, nada, nuthin'. So, does anyone know why an '03 burb would lose the diff oil and not show anything about it? Please, all thoughts welcome.

Cheers!

If it's not leaking at the center section (diff cover or pinion seal) that only leaves teh axle seals. Check behind the rear wheels to see if there are any signs. There is no other way to lose fluid.
