View Full Version : time to upgrade the lights

Ok, like it says I am looking to upgrade the lighting on the tahoe. The headlights and front turn signals are really fogged and almost yellow. I have seen new crystal headlight casings. I have also heard that some tend to leak and get water in them. Who's got some good ideas and or pictures for me? Trying not to break the bank either.

best ones out there for the headlights are the TYC HID kit like the ones i picked up. 992door and RT have/ had them and mine are just F-in amazing. mine were $225 shipped after negotiating with the "best offer" thing

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=400040757050

my turn housings are staying dry and fit perfectly. picked them up outa the LMC catalog for less than $50.

I had those headlights on my 99 suburban and loved them. I wish there was somthing out there for my silverado. As the Street legel TYC hids are AMAZING. Just like stock HIDS.

How hard is the install, are they a direct replacement or does it require some wiring changes?

headlight is direct install. But you will need to find a ground (not hard at all):Handshake:

Got the TYC HID headlights also, great lights. I'll be switching out the bulb to a higher kelvin though, or completely upgrade it to a 55W 8000K kit.

Bumper lights I also got off of ebay for $33 shipped.

They aren't the same though. The TYC HID Ones are designed for HIDS. His are still halogens with HIDs in there. You might as well put HIDS in your stock housings.

Lifted99, your bumper housings, they're TYCs also? If so, can you hook it up with a link. They match way better than the ones I have, I would just have to paint the trim black.

No, they have HID reflectors.

Lifted99Yukon

No, they have HID reflectors.

How do you know they are True HID Reflector's? Looks identical to any other clear headlights with the cut-off shield.

From the Ebay Ad:

"1988-1999 Chevy/GMC full size pick up truck / 1992-1999 Chevy/GMC Suburban euro clear head lights by TYC with built in Philips/Osram HID system!

Complete head light assembly with HID kit (left + right + complete HID system)

Philips/Osram HID is very high quality and is used by many well known car maker such as BMW, Audi and etc... as standard factory equipment"

Doesn't say anything about them being a HID Reflector Housing. Just the HID already setup.

Their HID reflector because they use the Same HID components that Ford does on their 06 back navigators. 09 back mustangs. Currently on the town car, lexus used it for a while etc. ITs called D1R R is for reflector and the housing and metel shield is designed differently on the inside. To the naked Eye it looks the same, But the reflector is cut very differently, and the bulb has more components than a d1s or HID "kit".

Did the 8K's come with the kit or did you get them separate? If you got them separate did you need to change the ballasts?

Ditto what RT said. LoL a reputable company like TYC wouldn't stick HIDs in a regular halogen housing, would be illegal.

Lifted99 doesn't have the TYC HID kit. The TYC HID kit comes with bulbs rated at 4300K. You would be able to swap out the bulbs though, just gotta make sure they are the correct 35w and D1R bulbs. I'm planning on switching the ballast and bulb to 55w 8000K.

Yeah I know you can just change out the bulbs but I'm going with a 55w ballast. As you go higher on the Kelvin scale you start losing usable light amount, lumens will decrease. 4300K rate bulbs will give you the highest lumens, usable amount of light than a 6000K or higher bulb would. This is why car companies use 4300K bulbs as OEM. A 55W ballast combined with a 8000K bulb will give me the same amount of lumens, even a bit higher and yet give me the blue hue I want. I would just switch out the bulb and keep the 35W ballast but I'm after looks and performance.

Rollin Thunder

d1c= shitty bulb. Its really a d1s bulb with a d1r housing base. IN a projector housing the housing does all the work.

In a reflector housing the reflectors job is to disperse the light the bulb emits. The bulb creates the cutoff , its a 50/50 job, remove one and your pattern goes to crap.

Here is a picture of a D2R bulb (same as a d1r except the ignitor (silver box on the base of the bulb) is separate from the bulb) Notice the bulb has a shield. With out that shield, your beam is going to be shit (which is what the d1c bulb is missing) http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n167/fishbonejr/philips_xenon_d2r.jpg

I have a feeling Im going to be doing exactly what you are doing because I also want 8000K. Where are you getting the ballasts from? I don't want to get some cheap junk off ebay.

better to get these 2 instead of the $250 4300K kit from ebay

Man this thread gets confusing as hell when you don't know much about lighting. Not trying to thread-hack, but can someone point me to a clear GLASS head light that's not $250. Preferable one that sells clear corners, parking and headlights.

I'm not terribly interested in HID, but it would be nice to have a headlight that's compatible if i want to do it later on too.

All headlights for the obs and up tahoes are compatible with HIDS. Its just the difference of doing it and doing it right.

You cant get a headlight that does both. Its either the HID headlight system posted. Or you get your glass headlights, and use halogens, Or put a kit in, but your beam wont be that good.

INFO FOR YOU ALL, putting an HID set in a car that did not come from the factory with hid's(system already installed) is illegal

its illegal to put the kit in any vehicle that did not come with hid's from the factory

that being said the housings are all the same unless they have the little bulb shield(its not a cut off shield(thats just on projectors)

that being said to that, i have 2 sets of hids in my truck 6,000K 35W Low beams and 8,000K 55W for my high beams,

why do we care if its legal or not, it looks good, and helps you see, so why not do it.

I know I've seen them on ebay before, try searching there.
Also, TYC makes 2 headlamps for the OBS, one is a halogen housing and the other one is a HID reflector one, so if it has the cup, that's the one.

Anyone else think these might be a touch on the ricey side, or maybe they look like they're trying too hard? Can I get a second? I think it would be awesome to get some halo type lights though, if it could be pulled off without looking cheap... I want to get the ghost headlight look.

haks310

These would not fit on an OBS. The projector headlights you see on ebay are not true projectors and just cheap look a likes. You can retro fit in some true projectors with HIDs in a headlights assembly and add halo rings but that would be a $500+ job
