Alright what you do next is take your serpentine belt off.

Start your engine again.

If the sound is still there, you'll need to invest in another engine or rebuild the one in there now.

It would also be a great time to do a 383 engine swap.

texaschevyryder
05-31-2009, 02:29 PM
which belt is the serpentine belt is dat the one at the front of the engine how to take off and replace the belt

Sepiroth
05-31-2009, 02:39 PM
IIRC there is only one belt on your engine. You'll need to relase the tension of the belt tensioner to give the belt enough slack to pull it off .

I wanna say a 3/8in ratchet end will work in the hole. If not, youll need to use a 1/2in ratchet to release the tension.

Also, have you checked your oil level?

jmildoc
05-31-2009, 02:46 PM
check your oil!!! Also my car did that same sort of noise one time and I thought it was a rod or something and it ended up being the pipe on the EGR valve was broken... so check out your egr too...

No visual aid. But your tensioner is under your alternator.

Definitely get that belt off. Start the engine back up and see if that sound is still present. If it is, your engine is gone.

what do you think about with emissions and your vehicle?? if you dont need emisions then i say throw a crate in it. but if you have to worry about it and such, then rebuild it and make it into a 383... do you know how to do some of the rebuild part or no??

Sepiroth
06-01-2009, 12:36 AM
IMHO, you can do a really nice rebuild for a grand. A grand on a GM crate engine IDK.

Costs about $1500 in parts to rebuild into a 383 last time I priced it out. There may be some kits that are a little cheaper.

Only thing for 1k that you will find could be a junkyard rebuild, or craigslist. More than likely for 1k you are looking at replacing as many parts as possible and doing it yourself or buying a friend a lot of beer.

Whereabout in Texas are you man?

Stay away from Jasper engines!!

If you need the truck up and running, go with a low mileage engine from a junkyard.

jmildoc
06-01-2009, 10:16 AM
from the sound of that video, it is done... I had a Jeep Grand Cherokee once that did the same thing, it cost me about $1800 I believe to have a shop put a used engine in... $900 for the engine and $900 for labor... so if you can find an engine and someone to do it or do it yourself you may make it out at around $1000.... I would have dropped mine in myself but I lived in an apartment at the time

where in Oklahoma are you?
I'd buy a 'good' salvage yeard Vortec....which year is your truck? You can get longblocks form NAPA for about $1500-$1800, with a full warranty. You use your stock instake, fuel injection, exhaust, serp setup, alt,etc...just longblock.
I bet you'd have over $1500 if you build 383.....

I had this same prob with my Tahoe Limited, on mine the heads were warped. You can tell if they are warped or cracked by looking at the oil on your dipstick. if its milky or bubbly...that's your problem too. This is caused by antifreeze getting into your oil. Sometimes you dont get the milky oil or bubbles because you may have burned it off by letting the engine warm up. A second way to know if that's what it is...if your antifreeze reservoir is always running a lil low...and you keep adding antifreeze and it keeps disappearing & sometimes you smell antifreeze but dont see any on the ground. Hope this helps! Good luck
