Has anyone repainted or coated the metal Z71 step bars? Mine are not dented but faded and chipped behind the front wheels. The step pads are also faded so maybe just best to replace?

Well if no one has painted their step bars can anyone recommend a paint for the plastic step pads that are also faded. If i paint the bars without the plastic it won't look good at all since they are faded. But I cant think of a paint to use that won't flake off from getting in and out of the hoe.

I used undercoating, but didn't spend enough time on prep. im considering pulling them off this spring, properly prepping and doing them in glossy emron.

My guess is they were powdercoated at the factory, but I think black truck bedliner spray would be a good way to refresh them plus add a little texture (I find I naturally step just behind the driver side pad where the bar is more slippery).

Satin "trim paint" (Duplicolor I think is the brand - green & black can) would look good, and I think it is formulated to be more durable than regular rattle can paint. I've had good luck with it doing a lot of the black trim on my 91 Mustang GT convt and it holds up very well.

Let me know if you try the trim paint Arthur. Seems like the best solution so far.

I had mine painted with heavy truck paint and added flex to the paint to resist stone chips. The flex is what they put on plastic bumpers so the paint don't chip or crack from the pumper moving. Two years and still no chips. Few scratches from getting in and out tho.

You can also get them Line-X'ed. For a DIY job, I suggest Herculiner though you need to prep it really well.
