That's a nice touch too, the cotter pin.

Found it, it was @SpareParts who made this...

In today's episode of "Tuning with Temu"; crazed sailor brings an armrest out to sea.
(figured I have quite a bit of spare time after working hours so why not)

Overall, disassembly was a lot easier than expected, just gotta know the underside plastic separates revealing the screws holding the hinge and latch in place.
Removing the old fabric was as easy as plucking off staples with a flathead.
Beneath it is a separate layer of dense foam, just gotta see to it that it stays in place during the next bit.
Starting from the inside edge, just trace the form fit fabric along the inner edge line and staple it down, then attempt to stretch outwards and around the outer edges in as even of a fashion as possible and staple it down. Staples need to be really short and don't bother trying it with an office stapler, get a bob the builder type stapler.

Found a weird old spray bottle of upholstery foam from the late 90's and figured why not and sprayed it down until soaking wet and left it to dry for two hours according to instructions. Came back to see it looked all ruined, pale white stuff all over the surface. Turns out it wasn't the case, was able to wipe it off with soap and water and now the fabric feels a lot more hardened and springy, not soft and stretchy like before, and no longer accepts greasy fingerprints. Ten points to whatever chemical coctail that was.

Still gotta wait another week for an assembled picture of the finished project but I'm bored so here goes;

Far from perfect but hey at least it's not any worse right? For 8 bucks I'd give this one a recommend.

Today I took a sunset picture after hauling a Massey 135 to a happy friend of mine. I'm starting to question this being just an impulse buy, it has in fact been the very best vehicle I've ever driven. (backstory I was looking for a truck at the time one year ago but won it at an action due to a joke bid)

How the heck am I supposed to get the rear center brake hoses off?
IMG_0440.jpeg

I've moved on, and will have to go back in later. Only thing I can think of are crowsfoot flares?

Here's the fill plug on my AXN axle..

And the axles side by side. Only the pumpkin is different?

Once you get the brake line off there is a clip holding the line in the bracket on the brake line side

It doesn't feel like there is enough space to get my wrench in there, much less turn it enough to get to the next flat.. I had some regular crowfoots, but didnt want to risk buggering the nut back there.. maybe i just didn't try hard enough, but figure I need to just install the axle first, and will be going back later for rear brake lines, rotors, and pads.

Just noticed that the instructions for replacing the driveshaft.

"Note: DO NOT re-use the yoke retainers. Discard and replace with NEW only."

Anybody re-use the u-joint straps? Only torqued to 18 lb ft as well.
I'll probably re-use them temporarily around town, until new ones arrive...

I did and then replaced them with new ones because of some mild vibration, thinking it "might" be part of the cause, but made no difference....

Yea those straps look pretty flimsy for holding the driveshaft on!
Guessing they might stretch a little...

never once replaced those straps. never had an issue.

in fact when I was very young and only slightly dumber, I missed one on a camaro. found it missing months later. never was an issue.

I think you're fine. the u joint cap goes deeper than 50% of the cup, so I don't think there's much force trying to move out.

Well, crap. Driver side folding mirror quit folding today. I know about the Gruven replacement gears. But after watching the repair video, I think I might take my chances with a used mirror from the U-pull-it. What a pain. Has anyone taken a jump box and powered the door for testing the mirror prior to removal?

nah, you can generally tell by feel if the mirror is nice and snug the motor is probably fine, I have done it enough times now it only takes about 15 minutes to r&r
you can of course test in the field by just cutting the harness wires for the motor and connect to voltage.
just had to do the passenger mirror on the 18 a week or so ago, luckily it is the same process.
and I was lucky I had a spare mirror I got for free a few months back that I salvaged the motor from, couldn't even find one for sale for the k2's, all just whole mirrors

I would pull the motor from a wrecker at the yard, cheaper that way instead of a whole mirror. all you need is a couple tools and you can have it out in 5-10 minutes

it looks much harder than it is. in fact unbolting the mirror from the car to replace it is harder than taking the mirror part off to change gears and motor.

I. made that mistake the first time, took all the door panel off to get the mirror off to work on it. only to then find a youtube of how to do it without taking the mirror off. way eaiser.

you don't need the expense parts. the cheap ebay/Amazon gears are all you been. Just gotta clearance the motor housing there it grounds out. razor knife and secs. wish I'd have saved the place I found the how too.

ya the plastic gear on ebay is like $10 but that involves a little more work of disassembling the motor, I had problems using the metal gear maybe the one I got was just not to spec it would just get stuck. After dicking around taking the motor apart I just have a couple spare motors in the storage room for next time. cheap and easy to grab at a yard and these guys on ebay are asking stupid prices for used ones. not paying $125 for something I can get for $10

I used the 10$ metal ones and yeah the first few times I could hear the gear like maybe the gear mesh wasn't perfect, but after a few times open and close it went away. self clearancing I guess haha.

I feel like it's a one and done thing. unless that little electric motor fails, but I don't think they are under any real load, especially if you grind off those little ramps like in that video. so hopefully never have to touch it again.

I think the motor died on the one I replaced on the silverado, if I put my ear up to the mirror all you could here was a click, versus if the gear is broken it makes a whirr noise (motor spinning freely) and in typical gm fashion it is mostly plastic instead of metal, the base is metal the rest is plastic
