My 2012 Yukon Denali AWD owners manual shows this....

I don't think it really matters which ones are crossed as long as you pick one way and stick with it.
I like the first way as the tires going to the steer axle have had time to wear into a straight pattern. I checked a 2009 Yukon Denali owner's manual and there was only one pattern. In the grand scheme of things you're right. Pick one way and stick with it.
