on the obs you will need a gm software card and the tis2000 working, there is usually a small file (key) that gets put into the tis2000 software to unlock the software
once you have that part done then you need to use the db9 to rj45 adapter and a ethernet cable, if you have trouble with communicating then you need to check the serial port settings the computer and software have to match settings, i.e. com port 4, 9600 baud, etc.
all the files you need will be in the tis2000 software already you will not need to be connected to techline at all as far as I know. I don't think there is any files or updates that you can get online everything is already in the tis2000 software including programming modules.
Thank you, I will give this a try.

And then sometimes you have to update the driver for the coms. USB drivers worse for compatibility.

I forgot about that. I had to try three different drivers for mine and finally got one to work.

Apologies in advance... I am a Tech 2 newbie!

Q: Are Tech 2 clones ready to run right out of the box? After inserting the PCMCIA card...

I don't want to mess anything up or brick it, if there are other steps required to get up and running properly.

Thanks!

Power it up in the house with the AC power supply. Make sure the software version is what's shown below, after the POST (power on self test):

When did they start using the Candi (spelling?) module on them? 2007+?

Mine came with one, but mine are 98 and 2008 models so if a 2000-06 needs it then you might keep that in mind @MassHoe04

2006 and prior don't use CANdi. I would think that the 2007 Classics (like the Silverado) wouldn't use it, either. Believe it's needed for 2007-? SUVs.

I did some further reading of the Tech 2 User Guide on Power supplies...

For non-vehicle communications, use either power port.
For Vehicle communications, plug into the power port on the DLC cable only.

@Doubeleive says clones might still reboot, even with use of switched OBDII extender cable... He has plugged the AC-12V DC power supply direct to the power port on the bottom of the Tech 2 clone with no ill effects.
