start at your $5000 price and see how it plays out, if you do not get any bites (within your desired time period) then maybe consider lowering the price
BEWARE there are TON's of scammers out there, do not take any electronic payment or check. take only cash in hand or meet at a legit bank in person
no matter how many promises they make, I am 100% serious
Thank you for that as This is my rule too…

I am more worried about some ahole trying to follow us after the cash changes hands as well. No meeting near our place…only in a public place with lots of folks. My plan is to have them give me the money then they can test drive it with my son…otherwise no test drive. Anything else I should do?

Thanks again guys…

be sure to write "sold as is" and "sale is final" on the bill of sale, write down the exact mileage. date & time.
fill out a release of liability form for dmv,
make 2 copies, 1 for you and 1 for them and take a picture of there drivers license.
if you have not already done so, get it a smogged the smog is good for 90 days. the smog is required for transfer of ownership.

the release of liability is important because if they get in a accident then it's on whoever is the registered owner, same if they get a parking ticket or use the hov lane, etc, etc.
the release covers your behind

Already got the smog cert. I was going to make my son go straight to the DMV and sit there until he gets the release done…the rest sounds like good planning…

Thanks again for taking the time to post…

On a test drive, I never ever ever accept a cell phone driver's license. I only accept a CURRENT state issued hard copy, official state license and the same of the insurance they have. If they don't have both, walk away. Plus, never a test drive alone. You or son goes along. I ALWAYS drive away with them in the passenger seat and then allow the buyer to drive back. Again, no like the rules, walk away. I also state all this in my ads.

Legit buyers will not have a problem with this set of rules.

Also, if can and state allows, keep your plates. In Oregon we can do either. Sold Linda's 1990 K2500 pickup about 1.5 years ago. There is a thread here about it. Anyway, we left the tags on it and were due to expire in 1 month. Then 3-4 months later we received a bill from State of Massachusetts about past due toll road charges. We sent the state copies of the sale and what Oregon allows and the buyer's contact info and his pic. Still took sending that info 2 more times and 8 months later it was all settled and we paid nothing. The buyer never registered the truck in his name, that we know of.

I too have reservations with high milage. Mine had 135,000, that is considered low on these old trucks, 240,000 is high in anyones book and every mile rolled lowers value. Things wear out with miles traveled. Mine went for $8000 so I think you would be lucky to get $5500. My wild A** guess. Good luck and let us know what happens so we can adjust our thoughts.

So the engine was replaced at 105K. The current engine only has 140K. Ever had any transmission work done?

While I understand this is all very well intentioned I would never buy a vehicle from any of you if you want me to hand you the money for a test drive and copy my license and insurance. First, I think it's common across most of the states that your own insurance will cover a prospective buyer on a test drive and paying cash for the vehicle before a test drive isn't a test drive. That's buying a vehicle and trying what you bought after the fact.

I've done things many different ways many times selling many vehicles and at no time have I ever had anyone try any of the above. If they did it had damn well better be nicer than a 20+ year old GMT800.

Ya there's no need to be handing over money or any other nonsense, go with them for a test drive absolutely, let them drive. If they also want to ride shotgun also by all means lets go

Sooo….original tranny! Miracles do happen.

Never towed anything and it was wifey’s for 15 years…then son’s till now. I make them baby them to a degree.

I always pull 1 gallon of tranny fluid with every oil change at 5k. That keeps it fresh and I have had great luck with these trannys.

Got 200k on one then traded it in. The 16 has 178k the son gets and my old long gone 99 had 200k when I traded that in. I think I may be the only guy with that many miles and no grenades yet.

I never said they had to allow me to copy the driver's license or insurance. I said show me or provide or have for me to inspect.
If you are gonna try to call me out for something, try to at least have your sheite claim right.
I used to be more trusting but Linda's truck sale problems have made me a lot more wary of turds.
Sometimes "exaggerations" are way out of bounds. C'mon man!

I didn't call you out or make any "sheite" claims about you so maybe you should check your reading comprehension. A claim I could make is that you want to deny virtual IDs but at least 20 states offer virtual licenses and insurance cards as completely legal and valid. You also haven't mentioned any method of confirming any of the information on an ID or insurance card and if you didn't take a copy then you don't have anything to point to them except the name they gave you.

Back on topic: this is a 20 year old Tahoe and you guys just need to take reasonable precautions when selling. #1 rule is vibe check because if you don't have access to run their ID or insurance then it will give you a lot more meaningful information about the prospective buyer.

"I would never buy a vehicle from any of "you" if you want me to hand you the money for a test drive and copy my license and insurance".

There was only 2 people that mentioned handing money or looking at license and insurance. Who were you talking to? The other people that did not mention either of these stipulations?

Yes, I would deny a virtual ID. My way of doing it may not be perfect but it satisfies me. You can claim that you were not calling two people out but I know you did and I answered back. The states offer virtual licenses and virtual insurances. BUT I am up front that I want the hard copies that are also available and I am not waiting for the buyer to show before I state that. Also, If you were not calling me out, who were you talking to when you said, "You also haven't mentioned any method of confirming any of the information on an ID or insurance card and if you didn't take a copy then you don't have anything to point to them except the name they gave you"?

You can take it personally and shine your insecurity for all to see and that's your choice. I made a statement about my own feelings on views being shared by the group. I didn't read your account name or whoever else I am supposedly calling out and I wouldn't have known it was you except that I looked after you quoted me.

Insecurity? That's it, huh?

That's the thing. Your "feelings" were not about a group. You called out 2 people, whether you knew there member names or not. You decided to make those 2 people's opinions about the subject, meaningless because you are/were above it all. I am really not mad but I am not gonna settle for someone not taking responsibility for their own opinions. You have your right and I have mine and the other member has theirs but I am not a person to insinuate that an opinion by anyone is just an uncalled for way of conducting safe business.

All good. I feel better now because I did not make any excuses for my opinions.

My Dad had a question for us if he ever found us glum or grumpy. He’d ask, “Who stepped on your tail?”

I come to this forum for people’s experiences, not their opinions. We can all learn from sharing our experiences and draw our own conclusions.

And just because you had a particular experience doesn’t mean everyone else’s will be the same, good or bad.

Kind late to this.... I used to buy and sell 4-6 vehicles a year. Did that for many years in the 70's and 80's. Then I actually got into the car business and lost interest on doing my sideline "job". Now? I want nothing to do with retailing a used vehicle.
In this case, I'd see about consignment at Streetside or Gateway. Or a company like that in the OP's area. There's also his circle of friends and go word of mouth. That'd be a simple sale. Or, just wholesale it. It's an inexpensive vehicle and a wholesaler might get close enough in price to broom it. Retailing something like that wouldn't be worth the aggravation. In my case any way. I have my boat listed for sale with a consigner right now.

Please explain how experience and opinion can be separated from each other. It sounds impossible to me.

Lots of opinions are asked for here. Lots of opinions, lots of times. Any time a member is having mechanical problems or tackling a new to them service on a vehicle, lots of opinions are asked for and given.

Experiences are great too. Opinions and experiences kind of fall in to the same boat, at least on vehicle forums anyway.

If I ask members what color to paint my truck, I realize I’m going to get opinions.

If I ask members for help with my AC compressor, I am asking for experiences that will help me solve a problem.

You can relay your experience without declaring an opinion on what you think of AC Delco parts, environmental laws, best freon, etc., etc.

Granted, sometimes sharing our opinions makes for good humor, but I don’t like wasting our energies picking at each other, especially when our opinions are formed from lack of experience.

Want an example? CyberTruck. Yep. Everyone’s got an opinion about them and a very small percentage of us have driven them and even fewer of us have lived with one as a daily.
