Have a nasty rust spot around the rear gate window button. Should I leave it alone, or can I chip away at the paint and hit it with some rustoleum, followed by a coat of matching ebony paint, followed by clear coat?

I thought the tailgate was fiberglass. A magnet won't stick to it but i do have a small dent in mine. Is it aluminum? Man that looks pretty bad BUT what a great time to do a wiper delete. Scott

I believe some are steel and some are aluminum.

Update: upon inspecting the rear gate, the bottom edge seems like the paint wants to flake off if I'm not careful in handling it. I'm afraid that there is more rust than I initially thought. Guess I need to start looking for a new gate or leave it alone for now.

Took it to a body shop today. The bottom lip of the gate also has the paint bubbling across the entire width of the gate. Estimate of less than $500 to fix the lip and the spot around the window button. I think this is fair, assuming there isn't any other rust spots hidden elsewhere in the gate that will bite me in the ass later on.
