Reverse trouble in 1997 Tahoe 4 x4

I just got the truck and it some times when going in reverse sounds like I hit something hard and makes a whining sound like if someone puts a car in park while driving could anyone give me a place to start in this issue

If you could jack it up and have someone move the lever while you listened you could possibly isolate where the noise is coming from. If it's transfer case try shifting into 4 wd and see what happens. If it's transmission you can drop the pan but there's nothing fixable without disassembly. If you pull the transfer case even if it's not the problem be sure to replace the front seal and do the pump upgrade before reinstalling it.
