Anyone that has seen my other thread knows that I am upgrading my stereo which got me thinking that I need an alarm system. I have no experience with car alarms so I would like some recommendations on good alarm brands and models. I am looking to spend around $200, but if you guys recommend I can spend up to $250. Remote start would be nice but not a necessity. I just found a Viper 5901 on sale today for $220 shipped. It seems to rate very highly, what do you guys think of it? I saw it mentioned on another thread here, how does everyone think it compares to other brands and models. Also I was kind of hoping on installing this myself, should I even bother attempting this? I'd consider myself pretty competent when it comes to cars but I don't have a whole lot of hands on electrical experience. I've installed an old remote start before but never an alarm. The problem is that if I have to pay an installer which I would assume would cost around $200 then the alarm may need to wait since I'm already spending a lot of money on my stereo. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

if your doing an alarm, a remote start is a nice addition, small added investment to alarm package. Go with any DEI product. (Viper, etc)

Ok thanks, good to know Viper is a good brand. I ended up buying the Viper 5901 just now because I found what I think is a very good deal. I got it for $194 shipped. I'm not sure what this forum's policy on posting links is but if I'm allowed to if someone wants the link I'll post it. I hope I can tackle the install myself, we'll see.

Edit: Company I ordered it from is unreliable so I removed the link.

ATTENTION: The company that I ordered the alarm from, Dealer Cost Car Audio, is a scam. It's been almost a month since I ordered the alarm and it still hasn't shipped. Emails to the company just say that it is backordered and that I should get it soon, nothing more. After further researching the company it seems that this is a very common complaint. Credit cards are charged and the order never ships. They have an F BBB rating. I requested a refund from them, we'll see how that goes. I may have to file a claim with my bank. I'm letting you guys know so you don't make the same mistake. I apologize if anyone ordered from them because of the link I had posted.

Yeah that's the one. Google "Dealer Cost Car Audio Scam" or "Dealer Cost Car Audio Complaints" to see what I'm talking about.

I got a Viper alarm with remote start installed for $350 Not too bad. The remote start is nice because in the summer here in So Cal it gets to 115 deg. so you just leave the a/c on high and start the car a few minutes in advance so by the time your ready to go, its already cooled off. Same works for cold weather.
