Every thing in the rear end is stock And the pinion is making a horrific noise when i shift from park to reverse/drive, So i am want to buy the parts online and have a shop put it in so it saves me a bit of money,

I am wanting to put in a rear locker, What size/bolt pattern will fit in a 1996 Tahoe?

What is the stock rear gear ratio for the Ring and Pinion?

What Barring rebuilt kit would you recommend for the new locker?

And last but not least What outer parts am i missing if any, to do a complete rebuild of the differential?

Thank you for looking you guys, Every one on this forum is always very helpful

you need new u-joints

check the rpo codes in the glovebox for the g80 limited slip and the code for the gear ratio

O yes i am sure i went under my truck and had someone shift it from park, reverse, drive and i could feel the banging in the rear differential, It sounds like that the pinion is slapping on the ring when you shift it, and i don't know if this relates to any of this but when i checked it right after a 7 mile ride to the lake and i felt it and it was pretty hot is that normal?

So i just got done calling 3 different dealer ships to find out the repo code in the clove box for the rear differential gear ratio and they all say that the truck is too old get that information can anyone help me on finding this out? And i do not have the the g80 on my set of codes

Stock was 3.73 if you had the towing package, 3.08 without I believe. It's not too old to get info from, the gearing ratio is probably on that sticker somewhere, you just gotta read carefully.

Hot rear end = no fluid or not enough. If there is play you probably sheered off some teeth, I did that a while back ... you can do your own gears at home, it's time consuming to get it right, I would use a pinion spacer and not a crush sleeve if I were you.
