I would have suggested he go ask the local DMV the question and see what their response would be...many ways to obtain a lost title, abandoned vehicle and the seller should be looking into this or its an illegal sale to begin with if he does not legally own it too. I see so many cars for sale on market place that say no title.

Go to DMV and ask for a Title. If the company no longer exists, how did someone get the vehicle with no Title? The DMV may be more sympathetic than you think. They can do a Title search and try to get hold of previous owner (regardless of State). If they are not around anymore and no one responds to them, they will most likely give you a Title and Registration. Sounds LOTS easier than what you are planning and hey no Felonies involved....

Anyone that has already broken the law before, as the OP stated, and is now asking for approval here, to do it again, will never go thru these steps.

This includes tampering with a VIN, Insurance Fraud, Mail Fraud (if you get your Insurance invoices and/or pay through the mail), and a number of other rather lengthy jail term items. Take into account any accident and the vehicle is found out to be displaying wrong VIN and if accident is your fault then all damages, liability, etc are all on you.

Never say never. There is always one or more life-altering events that is capable of changing men's minds. It's just that the odds are different with each offender. :(
