I decided to change the Thermostat in my car and now I have a leak. I've taken it off about 3-4 times and its still happening right behind the housing area.

When removing the original thermostat I realized there was no gasket and only the black O ring around the manifold. I had already purchased a new gasket and figured that this was mandatory. The old thermostat was a 160 instead of 195 as requested OEM by factory. Also, the screws on the housing were two completely different sizes. NOW!! I put everything back exactly how it was (adding the new gasket) and I can't stop the leak from behind the housing area. Any ideas what could be causing this???

Thank you in advance.

do you have the thermostat inside the open slot of the packing therefore rubber covering the top, bottom, and around circumference of it?

You need one or the other, gasketed thermostat or gasket on the housing, you can't use both. Our trucks are setup for a gasketed thermostat. Two different size (length) screws is normal, the thread pitch and size should be the same. If they are different there is a good chance there was a stripped bolt at one time and was heli-coiled or something at one point, pretty common, happened on my OE intake.

@sunlitcomet: yes

@retorq: the thread pitch and size are completely different. Im pretty sure the passenger side hole was stripped at one point and then heli-coiled.

Thanks for the replies. I'm currently trying to get it figured out. Hopefully I can have this issue taken care of asap.
