any recommendations for a body code scanner ?

A Tech-2 or any bi-directional scan tool man. It can query all the modules for codes and see the failure records, a recording of what was going on when the issue occured.

If that light is on, there's codes stored somewhere related to it.

tech2 clones are about 3 bills on chinacardiags
a vcx nano will replicate tech2win and runs about $100 but can be a bit of a headache to install and get working you have to be computer savy.
