Hole in muffler

I was underneath my car today and noticed a hole about 1.5 square inches on my muffler. Is this what's making my exhaust seemingly louder than it should be? Besides safety issues/getting pulled over/exhaust entering cabin etc, if I make this hole bigger will it make my exhaust louder? I wouldn't mind a cheap few decibles louder haha

It will also leak exhaust fumes that can possibly seep in to the cab some how.
