I’m planning on rebuilding another 5.3 to have ready for when the time comes to swap. My 07 has the LY5 cast iron block. Im going to start with a short block and work on building the bottom end first. Are 5.3’s from the 2000-2006 similar? I’m looking at a short block from an 05 for $100.

They do have some differences. Your LY5 is a gen 4, pre 07 is gen 3. Other than sensors in different locations your reluctor wheel on the crankshaft has 58 teeth, not 24 how the gen 3 is. If you were to go through with the swap youd have to tune and or swap tone rings or change its tooth count in hp tuners. Personally due to wiring/sensor differences and changing locations i wouldnt do so, however thats just my preference. Im not a fan of cutting up factory wiring even if its sliced in correctly, for all I know maybe they offer piggyback or "T" style harnesses however thats your choice

You can swap the Gen IV into a Gen III with that Lingenfelter 58X to 24X converter box, but you can't do the opposite.

Just stick with a Gev IV engine, so basically anything in the GMT900 generation.
