So back from another road trip, this issue has happened before but I don't use cruise that often so I forget about it.

Anyway so from time to time the Cruise will not engage, light on steering wheel lights up, but when you
press "SET" or resume the cruise indicator in the dash cluster doesn't come on and cruise doesn't hold.

a few miles later(or whenever) if you try it, it works... seemingly no particular reason why.

I have no lights on dash(other than tire pressure)
No codes in ecu that I'm aware of(I'll pull codes see if there are any ones in history, on Tuesday)

Otherwise good trip averaged 18.1 on the way up, and dropped to 17.1 on the way back.

Replace the brake switch under the dash. 25981009 or D1539J

GM OE or ACDelco Professional only.
Yep. Mine is on its way out. One trick that works for me is to turn the cruise on, tap the brake pedal very lightly, then hit set. Works 99% of the time for me if I do that. I use cruise every single day.

As others said, brake pedal switch. I replaced my failed one less than a year ago with a generic brand one from NAPA. Didn't last a year. A few weeks ago replaced it with an OEM one. Hopefully it lasts a little longer. Luckily, it's only about a $10 part.

Funny the switch is mentioned, I was guessing it might have been that, a few months ago when I pulled codes, there was a brake switch soft code(wasn't setting off a CEL) Yay! Thanks.

Having the same issue, but have to pull over kill the engine, open the door to turn off the accy timer and crank back up. Then it will usually work. When it doesn't work, it is from crank up. Have replaced the brake switch with Delco part. Symptoms did not change with brake switch change. The radio also does weird stuff at times with the steering wheel controls. Vol up or down will cause another function to work as well as memory advance or retard. After a while, everything works as it should. Also the controls on the front of the radio always work correctly. I was wondering if it could be the BCM on my 2007 Yukon XL causing these issues.

Could be Reggie. My 2006 Pontiac Montana with this same CanBus architecture did that with the radio controls on the steering wheel. It required a re-flash of the BCM or maybe a new one, don't remember, it was under warranty.

Check your grounds and battery cables and the age and health of the battery. A bad cell or loose/dirty ground can cause all kinds of gremlins. Best way to get at this problem is with bi-directional scan tool though like the Tech-2 along with the shop manual.

Thanks for the response, James. Battery is new and the problem existed with the previous battery. I have checked for difference in potential with the engine running with a DVM between the negative post of the battery and chassis and there is none.

In Hell, but I've got a Tahoe!
OK, this may be a stupid thought, but does the cruise interact with the ABS or airbag system? In my 'hoe, the relays for both ABS & airbags have been pulled, and the cruise control doesn't work - does the same thing as described here. May be off base but might be related somehow Worst case, can eliminate something. . . ;)
