BREAKING: GM is officially recalling the L87

[2024 White Tahoe]

Anyone running an oil separator on their SUV?

1.) I have the Corsa unit.

2.) The last few times emptying the can I have paid particular attention to the oil (every month), and it does seem like there are some very small metallic-looking flake in the oil / can. I am guessing this is NOT normal? SUV has 23,406 miles.

3.) Have NOT performed the recall yet (have only received the first letter).

4.) For those of you with an oil separator... Is this something that you plan to take off before returning back for the recall work? Is it something that GMC could push back against?

If I had an oil separator on the engine, I would remove it before I took it to the dealer for an inspection.

You do NOT want GM to deny you a replacement engine due to an aftermarket engine add-on.

One of our local dealers claimed they would take recalled L87 trucks on trade with no change in value. When we started looking into trading one of our recalled vehicles for a new 2025, someone we know with another GM dealer told us to wait because they've had several 2025 6.2 trucks blow in the last few weeks. Knowing that, we hit the brakes on trading for a new one. If the 2025 motors are still bad, then I doubt anything changes for 2026 either. Has anyone here tried to trade an under recall 6.2 vehicle to another brand dealership? I've heard mixed signals on whether anyone will even take one on trade.

I wish I wanted to sell my 2004 Silverado K2500 HD crew cab right now because I could get BIG $$$$ for it right now.

I really do feel bad for the 6.2 owners effected by this recall.

Agreed. GM admitted there was no part number change, but a change in suppliers and or improved quality control from its suppliers. If 2025s are still failing, clearly none of that is true OR there are other issues. Manufacturers are past the point of building anything to last, and just build the majority to last through the warranty period. To do it right, unfortunately someone has to build it themselves like you did with your re-build. The majority of guys in my office drive 2020 and newer GM half ton trucks... I've had a 5.3 with electrical gremlins and lifter issues, another had two 6.2 failures and is now driving a LZO 3.0 Duramax, and another has had multiple coolant control valve failures in both a LM2 and LZO 3.0 Duramax trucks. None of us have been spared major issues with major downtime. Just when you think Ford could be the answer, someone walks in and tells us about the 20+ recalls they've dealt with on their F150. The wife would never go for it, but my next one may be something older and simpler with a hand built, balanced and blueprinted engine.

2022 Suburban Z71 6.2L. Got my first letter last week. Trying to digest all this. About halfway through this thread (reading backwards for the most part), but have a couple questions:

Should one choose to do so, can you request to schedule dealer inspection in advance of 2nd letter/parts available status? Or, are they just going to tell me I have to wait?

Common sense and personal experience tells me there's a disconnect between GM and their dealer network, so when I get a second letter, is this equivalent to GM releasing my VIN to dealer network? Asked another way, when does a dealer know I'm eligible for inspection (aka repair parts available)? Can I cross-reference my VIN somehow on my own to determine any relevant facts, or is that obscured by GM?

Obviously, like many here I'm trying to balance safety with serious inconvenience. We tow a boat and travel trailer routinely this time of year, so trying to come up with a logical plan to address this.

Your dealer looks your truck up in their electronic system and cannot address the recall in advance of a 2nd letter from GM because it wont indicate your VIN has been released yet. GM is phasing the recall in because GM nor the dealer network can handle all the inspections and potential replacements at once. Until you get the letter, you are stuck getting oil changes at the dealer with the originally specified oil, and praying it doesn't blow up between now and having the recall inspection performed. Even after the inspection, if they indicate your engine is "good," many of us believe they are just kicking the can down the road and many more 6.2s that were inspected and found to be "good," will still ultimately fail.
