Billet rusts???

I was washing the burb today and noticed the finish on my bowtie on the front bubbling up similar to when a body panel rusts from behind the paint. So either my billet bowtie is a POS and just "billet plated" or billet can rust. Has anyone had this happen before?

I have seen this before on a old billet grille. Aluminum itself does not.

At least it wasn't an expensive item. I'm tossing around getting a stock bowtie and having it color matched (leaving the "chrome" surround) and also doing away with the billet inserts. It's probably time to switch it up anyway. I was just surprised to see this when washing her up today

An idea just hit me. I think I'm going to just strip this costing off my "billet" bowtie, take it down to metal (without the rust) and colormatch it. Seems like it'd work to me

that's what i did with my 01 tahoe. Had the billet, but it clashed with so much chrome. so I scuffed it and rattle canned it white and then cleared it

So the next question is once I colormatch the bowtie should I keep the billet inserts in or take them out?
