Anyone use a Curt Hitch mount cargo basket?

I found one NIB, but not the folding type, so this sits closer to the bumper.

It's a Curt 18152 24x60 and I plan to use a 20 cubic foot bag with it, will be on a 2012 XL Denali.

The bag sits 26" high max, my issue is the liftgate. Curt has an 8" extension and this will just barely work.

Has anyone ran into this problem? Curious what works and what doesn't.

I have used the 18153 folding basket which is the same but sits farther out but folds.... on our Highlander, but this one unfortunately is fixed.

Would like to use the liftgate without having to move the carrier when full or unload it, so that's not an option IMO.

I wish I could use the lift gate with my setup.
but I went for a cheap one.
(this was under $100 when i bought it, no way would i pay more than $130 for it)

No major complaints, but it's a pita to deal with sometimes.
Mostly used to carry targets to my property and used to carry gas cans and equipment that I don't want stinking up the tahoe.

So here's the setup that worked for me.

I used the Curt 18152 24x60" fixed cargo rack, and also used a Curt 8" extender, holding a MODOKIT 24x60x26" 22 cubic foot waterproof bag.

This allowed just enough clearance to open the liftgate IF you place items in the forward position of the bag that's soft and pliable.

I added a small ratchet strap to keep any wobble to a minimum, this worked well with our Highlander as well.

I like it!

For my use,
I just worry about smacking it hard when doing some light trail driving with it sticking out that far.
It sure would be nice to access the rear end w/o unloading the carrier and dropping it.
:hmmm2:

I might just give it a try.
I also saw an extension that would also raise it a little.

By design, the rack has a slight upward angle on the tongue, maybe a 1- 1.5" rise at best, looks straight in the pic but it has a rise.

Are you referring to the double tube receivers? If so, I agree, that would lift it up but might completely cover your taillights with a bag that size. Then you would need an auxiliary light kit for the rear.
How far is the furthest point sticking out from the vehicle? Do you need to attach a red flag to the backside like you do with lumber?
I believe that's if you are at 4' or more you need a flag, the rear of this is less than 4" prob 3.5 ft.

I'm not 100% sure, but I believe with the Curt 18153 folding 24x60 rack, you won't have any issues. This has a longer tongue to allow for folding, but might not be 8" longer which seems the be the minimum.

I just happened to find this one for less than half the price of the 18153 carrier and I don't drive around with it empty anyway, so no need to fold it.

I checked Curt's website, and the folding 18153 is 7" longer than the fixed 18152. While the folding is a nicer setup, I'm already on the cusp of the 8" extension being too short with the fixed basket so this appears.to be the better choice for my needs.

Courtesy of Curt.
