20 years or so ago the trick would be to find some of the 60-80's Cadillac, Buick, etc luxury car horns. Usually quite deep and loud without being obnoxiously so.

Y'all,

I'd like to install a set of more "authoritative" horns, but not to "train horn" level. I'm aware of this previous thread, and while I have the mentioned Hellas on my '88 BMW 535i and like them for that application, IMO their sound doesn't suit trucks.

My criteria:

* "Truck" sounding.

* Notably louder than stock, but not "train horn" level.

* Electric is preferable.

So, what are your experiences and suggestions?

Thanks,
Scrappy
I would like to install the loud obnoxious train horn on my 25 Sierra HD that would use the normal actuator on the steering wheel. But I don't want to have to disassemble the entire front end to install it... guess I'm stuck with stock... smh

I recommend against this modification. People will just think you're a teenager.

This is a dead serious recommendation. It is no dooky and cheap. Screw air horns. Just add a couple of 6V horns from an old 6V GM car or truck. Or any 6v horn from anything. I suggest Cadillac horns. DO NOT wire in series. Each goes direct to power just as they are wired now. They will probably fit exactly where your factory horn is. When you hit those with 12V they will get someone's attention. I converted my old 61 Apache 10 to 12V. I did not change the original 6V horns. They survived and scared the crap out of whoever's attention I needed. The sound was obnoxious. It scared the crap out of my passengers as well. Perfect for text messaging and/or drifting drivers. You might draw the attention of a 9mm here and there so be judicious in its use. If you are nervous about running 6V on 12V don't be. We are not talking sensitive electronics here. Guaranteed to work.

Just to let you know how old I am, another trick from the good old days was running 6V headlights on 12V of power. Yes, it will work for awhile. Those 6V bulbs are tough. Instant driving lights.
