Adding bluetooth.

After heavily reading thread way off in other forums, I think I have it down. This part number, 20783877, seems to work with any Denso Nav system in a GM NNBS full size truck/SUV. Then it needs the antenna, which is 15938939.

But, the posters in the threads I am reading it over are people with NNBS Pontiacs, and they are pulling them out of wrecked SUV's like the 09 Buick Enclave. However, THEY have to send them in to a specific member on that site and have it programmed to work, then they call OnStar and let them know that they added Bluetooth.

Since they are going from full-size NNBS to full-size NNBS, I do not think we would require ours to be sent in and programmed. Plus, they only program theirs so OnStar will show up that it has Bluetooth. Despite that, is this worth the money and time? Or would you rather stick with aftermarket?

I'm interested if you can get it to work. It would be nice to have factory bluetooth (if it works with iPhone).

It really doesn't seem to be that hard, as long as we can find out what parts the 09+ models use to make the Bluetooth work.

The antenna is available via gmpartsdirect however the other part number says you can't order but rather have to talk to the Dealer.

I think it's actually installed between the radio and OnStar module.

Of course... I don't know if this pertains to our vehicles as I've heard that you have to replace the existing OnStar module with the newer Generation model which includes Bluetooth.
All OnStar modules are classified as a restricted item by GM. GM will not allow Vendors / Dealerships to simply purchase this item the supplier.

GM only provides these modules if there is a case where the original module needs to be replaced. This means that both the VIN of the source vehicle, PLUS documentation of the issue needs to be provided with the Technical Assitance Centre for GM to release one of these modules.

That's why you can only obtain a module if it's used/salvaged.

Also, it'll need some sort of harness, how do you think we can get one of those? This is a little confusing but hopefully we can get it to work.

Still doing some more research. The more I dig into this the more it's looking like you have to get a Bluetooth capable OnStar module from someplace like eBay and replace your existing non-Bluetooth module. The dealer would have to program this I would assume.

I don't think there is anything to plug in. You're going to have to replace the existing OnStar unit you have with a "salvaged" unit from ebay or the likes. It will simply plug in where your old module was. The catch is that you'll have to have the dealer program it to work in your vehicle and then work with OnStar to sync the salvaged module to your VIN. If not, you may lose certain OnStar functionality due to it eing a salvaged unit and OnStar will think it's the old vehicle or the vehicle the module was originally programmed for.
Do an ebay search for OnStar Module and you'll see what they look like.

I saw a few...but I'm starting to like the ease of one that I found that's aftermarket but it's hidden and works with OnStar just fine. Some of them replace OnStar but this one runs alongside with it, I might actually consider it if it also integrates with the DIC.

I wish the Tahoe had onscreen dialing on the nav like the Escalade does.

So, 20783877 is all you'd need to replace to get Bluetooth, according to some forums I've been reading. It IS available at gmpartsdepartment.com for $242. I might consider doing this.

When I do a search on gmpd.com I get the following:

Yep. Actually, it probably wouldn't hurt to buy the antenna with it, as it may need that if the module doesn't have one built-in.

I ordered through the site that I mentioned when I bought my Escalade spoiler and had no problems! So I'd definitely buy through them again.

Lookie what I found.....

Here's what is needed to swap your OEM OnStar to a OEM Bluetooth Onstar module.

Bluetooth OnStar Module Part Numbers: 25984444 and 20783877(newer)
YOU CANNOT GET THEM from the dealer, online parts stores, etc.... You have to buy them from an individual(ie..ebay, member classifieds)

If the module does not have the bluetooth antenna attached the part number is 15938939.

You do not have to change your steering wheel controls unless you want to see the phone symbol. They work the same except the newer ones have the phones symbol. If you want to buy the newer steering wheel switches the part number is 25851951. I did not as it was not necessary to work.

Steps to swap the modules:
Remove the trim bezel surrounding the radio, ac controls, and accessory panel. There are 8 or 9 clips that hold it in place. I used a butter knife to pry the trim bezel off. The butter knife is thin enough to go between the trim and the outer console. I pried the trim bezel out enough to slide a long thin flathead screwdriver under it. I slid it approximately half way so the tip was next to one of the clips. Gently apply pressure on the clip, you will think it is going to break, until it pops loose. Go around the bezel until all the clips are loose. Remove the accessory panel, ac controls and radio in that order. There is enough slack in the stock wiring to leave them connected. Just pull them out and move them over to one side. I put the accessory panel and ac controls on the right then the radio on the right. You will see the OnStar module at the bottom of the opening. It is held into place by two clips. One one either side. One on the left and one on the right. I used two long thin flathead screw drivers to hold the clips back off of the OnStar module so I could use both hands to lift the unit out of the retaining bracket. The OnStar module does not have a lot of slack to pull it out while connected. I disconnected it by removing the connector on the right first and then worked my way across the back from right to left until all of the connectors were disconnected. The antenna round antenna connectors are removed by pushing down on the retaining clips and sliding them back.

If you want to retain OnStar functionality it is a good idea to take picture of the label on top of the new module. This will give you the Station ID number and other important information needed to complete the programming.

After I plugged the new OnStar module in I tested everything before putting it all back together.

To access the bluetooth I pressed mute(voice) button and waited of the beep. Then said OnStar. Waited for the system to say OnStar ready then said bluetooth. Waited for the system to say bluetooth ready. You can say help to get a list of options. I chose "Pair" to pair my blackberry. You can follow the voice instructions to complete the pairing to the devices. Good news is that you can pair to multiple devices. If you and your wife or friend are riding together you can pair both phones. If your phone is not available you can tell the system to use the other phone to make the call. Or it your friend wants to call someone using their caller id they can choose to use their phone from the list instead of yours. Pretty cool!

Enabling OnStar functionality. I'll start by saying I have not completed this part of the process yet so I am speculating. I pressed the OnStar button and of course they answered using the wrong name. I told them I performed a hardware swap and needed to update their system with new OnStar module station ID number. They said I had to take it to the dealer first so they could run it through the "TIS2" web program. Then I could call them back to move my service to the new module.

If you do in fact try ordering this from where you mentioned let me know if you're successful.

GREAT find! Do you know where the antenna module mounts?

What I think I might do is see if my dad will let me have the module out of his 2010 Sierra, since he won't use the Bluetooth, and add it to mine that way. But I need to know where the antenna is so I can locate it in his, remove it, and put it in my Tahoe.

I just ordered the module and b/t antenna from the site you mentioned so we'll see if they actually ship the module or if I receive an email stating they can't ship it.

You should be able to find the antenna by tracing the wires but I'll let you know what it looks like when I receive it regardless.
