The other day I went to visit old friend who lives up real steep cat road 1/2 way up this hillside. I always put it in 4 wheel high . There are switch backs so you can't really go that fast. Any way was climbing and was losing power so I manually shifted it into 2nd and it wouldn't go. Felt like it was slipping so I shifted back to drive to continue on. Do I have have clutch band problems in the future. It does go ok on flat ground

Umm, sounds like it could be slipping possibly? Does it do it in 2wd? What transfer case do you have? The NP246 Autotrac unit has a clutch pack that could also be slipping?

Either a transmission clutch pack and/or the band are slipping. Plan on a transmission rebuild ASAP or get it properly diagnosed...

I have no idea what transfer case i have. In 2W or normal driving i don't notice any slipping . I usually just put it in overdrive and it seems fine

To ID the transfer case, post up the Nxx codes that are in the glovebox lid and we'll interpret. It helps to post a pic of the 4wd dash switch, too.

When was the tranny serviced last? In what condition is the tranny fluid now? Dark red, brown, smells burnt? How's the fluid level?

First...Check the fluid level and condition. Is it still red or is it brown and stink? I've fixed a lot of transmission problems with a fuel filter.
Transfer case should have a small round plate on the back of it with a red emblem and it has the transfer case # on it. While down there check the fluid in the TC.

NP8 is a New Process 246 2-speed transfer case. The fluid you are showing looks like transmission fluid; these transfer cases take GM Auto Trak II fluid, which is blue in color.

Any Codes set? Dash check engine light works when key turned to Run?
Also you could have been going too slow for 2nd gear.
Try hill again in 2wd, then 4low.
Trans fluid looks fine.

Yes it's tranmission fluid in the picture which somebody asked for. I can't check transfer case fluid at this time due to knee surgery

No codes at that time. I had shifted manually into 2 ND and it just felt like it was gonna come to a stop.

My bad; I assumed you were showing the transfer case fluid.
