If I come to a stop light and sit there for a minute, there’s a slight hesitation when I start going again. Let off the brake pedal and it moves like normal for a second, then feels like it completely disengages, lightly press the throttle and it catches and goes down the road completely fine. It’s only happened twice this week and only when it’s hot. Fluid level is good and the fluid itself has 3k miles on it. Has anyone experienced this issue and what’s usually the culprit? I couldn’t find any posts that had the exact issue I had but people with similar issues were saying bad torque converter. If it’s internal to the trans I’m not worried about because I’m about to build a different one to put in. I have pressure gauges at work to check line pressure, but again if it’s internal to the trans I’m not worried about doing all that. I know the transmissions in these trucks are junk but I never heard anything about these having torque converter issues. I planned on reusing this torque converter when I built the other one. I know the other converter I have is good, only issue is the trans it was attached to had a catastrophic failure and sent metal everywhere. No way I’ll be able to flush all that out.

You might be interested in reading through the thread that @NickTransmissions posted about that transmission series:

Holy cow bro! Dont reuse a torque converter. Thats like running used motor oil in your brand new vehicle engine. That makes zero sense.

Don't be penny wise and pound foolish. Too much of that going on these days...Those people FAFO real quick with such moves.

Rebuild the transmission using quality parts following all valid inspection, testing, reconditioning (where applicable) and assembly procedures/protocols (including replacing the TC - no chain store converters) and your transmission will last you a very long time.

I didn’t even realize you were on this forum. Ive watched a lot of your videos preparing myself for the rebuild.

I didn’t know reusing a converter was that bad of an idea, it’s not something that got mentioned a lot when reading up and watching videos. Maybe it was somewhere and I overlooked it, but again never heard anything bad about the converters so I thought nothing of it. I Will be replacing the converter now.

Since you are on this forum, I do have a couple questions for you. I plan on putting a mild cam in down the road, most likely BTR torque cam, and their website says it works with a stock stall converter. I also plan on towing with this truck. Do you think stock stall is a good idea or should I bump it up slightly?

Where do you normally source your parts from? I planned on ordering through globaltransmissionparts.com and using the “build your own kit” option. With just a mild cam, headers, intake, and tune, which clutch packs would you recommend? I have a kit sitting in the cart with hi-engergy and kolene steels but I see they have options with OE steels. I’m assuming it would be better to go with kolene steels? Would that be overkill for my plans?

I didn’t realize it was that bad of an idea. Figured if it’s not messed up and there’s no metal in the fluid then there wouldn’t be an issue. Other than posts talking about choosing different stalls, the converter was rarely mentioned. I will be replacing it now.

From your name “Nick Transmissions” it appears you are in the transmission business or pretty knowledgeable about them. Because most of us aren’t close enough to come to your shop ( our loss) who would be a good transmission shop to buy from? Monster Transmissions has such a poor reputation on all the forums that I’ve seen, who would you recommend for a transmission shop to buy from?

Any time you are contemplating rebuilding a 4L60E stop by here first and swap out the known weaknesses of the stock parts here: www.sonnax.com

You'll thank me later...

What transmission? 4L60/4L80? Unless you're looking for something real high performance for street/strip or full race (if so, I'd recommend Circle D Performance Trans in Houston, Gearstar, CK Performance, Broader, etc), I can't honestly think of a single reman company I would recommend.

If you're looking for a new 6L80 or 6L90, I'd buy directly from General Motors...3 yr/100k mile warranty - can't beat it.

Incidentally, I have someone coming out here from Memphis to drop a 4L60E for performance build in July. He's out here for a wedding so will be dropping the unit off to me then once done, I'll be shipping it back. Yes, per my user name, I rebuild transmissions for a living and been doing it for nearly 15 years.

Thanks for the info, hopefully it will save people on the forum some time, money and aggravation.
