Interesting topic this Auto thing,I was also told not to use it by a drive line tech.Mine is a 900 though so maybe there different.

no difference, read the owners manual the only thing you should not be driving around in 4lo or 4hi
if you are in auto it actually takes some load off of the rear differential and may last longer.
