1999 Yukon brake light adventures.

When I got the 1999 GMC Yukon 5.7 V8 2wd, the tail lights wouldn't light until I changed the turn signal switch. Then suddenly they worked. Only about a month or two later they stopped working again. All lights but the brake lights come on. Tail light boards? If not, what else?
