which one to buy???…I have seen so much conflicting information for the fluid to use in my 2005 Yukon Denali AWD transfer case.

Owners manual lists Dexron lll H

Valvoline lists blue bottle Dex/Merc covers Dexron lll (but doesn’t list the latest H version)
Valvoline lists red bottle Maxlife Multi Vehicle as covering Dex lll H

what is recommended here by owners of our GMT800 vehicles with AWD all the time like in the Yukon Denali/Cadillac Escalade from 2005 or older where the OM recommends Dex lll H???

I’ve seen use Dex lll, use Dex Vl as it is backwards compatible, don’t use Dex Vl as GM specifically warns against using trans fluid in your transfer case-GM TSB, use AutoTrak ll, don’t use Auto Trak ll as it is for later GM vehicles...

your help and real world experience is appreciated...

Bill

NP149, I think is what that model has?

Have you checked the Owner's Manual to see what it lists?

Autotrac fluid as @Fless mentioned (the blue stuff, but they do make a red version) is for the NP246. That one is unique in that it uses a clutchpack similar to an automatic transmission, so that's why that Tcase requires a special fluid. The non-auto Tcases don't require that.

Let me find it... I was told in the SilveradoSierra forum by a legit guy that hotrods GM trucks.

I didn't know it either. I think it's made by Valvoline IIRC?

Edit: It's this one. I looked it up and it says it's red. https://shop.valvolineglobal.com/pr...faKfiyC6TuyGQGmN8k8zZKDOCK2qCcdySPO&Size=1+QT
I have some on the shelf. It is for positive red.

Interesting. If I saw that coming out of a NP246 my first thought would be that someone put the wrong fluid in.

@SilverSport ...don't mind the autotak Tcase fluid discussion here...

Apologies for getting derailed...

I think you have the NP149, can you please confirm?

Those NP149s have been proven to be pretty stout in the dtag racing scenes, even though they weren't really designed for high powered stuff...

Nothing but chain, gears and bearings in it. Personally i would flush it best i could and put 5w30 back in it.

Why not use whatever GM specifies? They made the vehicle and warranted it.

This information applies to 2007 and prior GM passenger cars and trucks.

Dexron III is being phased out as a product name. It is being renamed Manual Transmission Fluid and carries p/n 88861800 U.S. (88861801 Canada).

If fluid p/n 88861800 U.S. (88861801 Canada) is not yet available when servicing a manual transmission or transfer case, Dexron III can be used in its place.

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Condition/Concern:
Unavailability of manual transmission fluid part number 88861800 U.S. (88861801 Canada).

Recommendation/Instructions:
If fluid part number 88861800 U.S. (88861801 Canada) is unavailable when servicing a manual transmission or transfer case, Dexron III can be used in it's place. DO NOT use Dexron VI in place of the manual transmission fluid in any manual transmissions or transfer cases as a failure may result.

Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.

What's the source of this info?

because Dexron lll H is no longer certified by GM…I did find that Valvoline MaxLife Multi-Vehicle fluid is Dexron lll H listed as well as Dexron Vl...
What's the source of this info?
I keep being told this but have yet to find the actual source/TSB for it…the above mentioned Valvoilne MaxLife Multi-Vehicle transmission fluid says it is compatible with Dexron lll and that is what the OE fluid was for the transfer case...

Valvoline MaxLife Multi-Vehicle is what I have purchased but not yet installed…Valvoline had a blue bottle Dex/Merc that listed Dexron lll compatible but did not show Dexron lll H compatible so I went the red bottle of Maxlife Multi-Vehicle as it DID show compatibility with Dex lll H; the original fluid used...

IIRC some members of this Forum have used Valvoline red bottle MaxLife Multi-Vehicle in their GMT800s without incident...
