07 Tahoe/Broken torque converter = tranny rebuild?

Hey guys,

The other day I went to pull away form a set of lights in my '07 Tahoe and my engine just spun up....and we barely moved....
The tranny shop said that my torque converter disintegrated...my question is, if my torque converter died, does that warrant a complete rebuild of my tranny? The shop is telling me that the metal shards fro the torque converter have now gone through my tranny and it needs to be rebuilt. To my knowledge, the torque converter is in its own compartment....no?
Reason I ask is, I just had the tranny rebuilt 18months ago...albeit by a F'n joke of a tranny shop (Benz Transmissions, Maple Ridge BC), hence the dead torque converter already...

They are correct. When a TC blows up, there is fine particulate that goes everywhere. Everything needs to be disassembled, cleaned, replaced as needed, the cooler needs to be flushed, etc.

What kind of warranty did you get 18 months ago? If none and you plan on keeping the truck for awhile, then I'd go with a GM Certa trans. 3yr, 100k warranty nationwide

Have you heard back?

About half the time, the converter’s failure is catastrophic and destroys the pump and sends fine metal particles through the rest of the transmission. Dealer will prob re stab it with a remanufactured unit with a new torque converter.

The other 50% or so of the time, the converter clutch seizes but doesn’t damage the pump however the transmission typically needs overhaul anyway due to contamination from the failed converter.

Sorry to hear of that happening. Hopefully it gets/got all fixed up.

When I rebuilt my 6l80, it still worked fine.
More of a proactive rebuild.

and even with that, the pump in the transmission needed to be replaced.
That's a transmission disassembly required task, plus it's a good idea to clean and go through everything anyways.
