Trying to figure out whether there's a way for the vehicle navigation to function without a data package. From what I've learned, downloading offline maps is only possible with a data plan and even then, the offline maps often get deleted within a couple days.

Has anyone has been successful at downloading offline maps for the vehicle navigation and not having them be deleted when I don't have a data plan? Can the maps be downloaded with a temporary data plan and then auto updates turned off to prevent the system from deleting them?

I came from a 2022 Honda Odyssey that had a garmin-powered navigation that was very well done for when I was too lazy/unable to load up Android Auto and use Google maps.

I've searched around these forums and it seems the consensus is you need a data plan to use the vehicle navigation (google-powered). I'm hoping someone else has discovered a way around this crappy weakness. Otherwise will have to hope Google unlocks this in the future.

The only way this is "unlocked" will be by users subscribing...it is indeed part of GM's revenue growth plan long term.

and others...feel free to look it up...but, what you are experiecing is part of the plan.
Best bet to get by without is use AA or Car Play...or suck it up and pay for the data.

I think $11.99/month gets you the apps re-enabled on your head unit. You may be able to negotiate for a discount if you offer to buy the whole year in advance.

Disappointing; Android Auto it is then! It's faster to respond to voice commands anyway than the built-in system which takes a few seconds.

I don't blame GM for wanting to have regular cashflow but it is a shame that their push will result in their technology sitting idle (at least in my vehicle) - I'm not paying for another subscription, especially one that's redundant to what my phone already does.

I think GM may even be surprised by instability in these cashflows when a recession hits - a la Peloton's massive revenue drop. There's nothing like squeezed wallets to force users to cut back on redundancies - why pay for a bike exercise service every month when I can pay one time and ride outside for free, or for multiple streaming services (netflix, hulu, amazon) when I only watch shows from one, or for in-vehicle navigation when my phone already has Google/Apple maps.

Does anyone know how to stop the messages about not being connected that pop up on the infotainment screen when the truck starts up?

OnStar service does not work in Russia. Therefore, we make a WiFi access point in a mobile phone, find it on the car screen and get the ability to download Google maps for offline navigation
