you guys know how to make a person feel welcome...

Let me share my experience with Mobil One. In the 1980s and 1990s, you could literally run the engine out of oil with M1 and it would not freeze up. They ran commercials showing this and one night at the drag strip I inadvertently proved it as well. Around 2010 Mobil changed the formulation from a Group IV to a Group III oil and that level of lubricity went away. I started using plain M1 in my truck when I bought it and noticed that the engine was noisier on start up. To be brief, started using ACDelco's oil and the rattling on start up went away and my gas mileage picked up a little. Also quit running their M1 EP oil filters as they reduced my oil pressure about 2-3 psi whereas the K&N Gold filters do not.

So, moral to the story is that not all Dexos1 Gen2 oils are the same. There are guys on here that run SuperTech Walmart oil and do have no problems whatsoever and we run this oil in our Kia and old Pontiac without issue.

When comparing the specs of RedLine oil with other synthetics, only ACDelco and Shell's Rotella Gas Truck had comparable numbers which kept my motor from rattling on start up. I compared a lot of them but not all of them and this was done 3 or so years ago.

I can buy the ACDelco oil affordably from Rock Auto or drive an hour south to an ACDelco dealer. If this supply goes away, I would switch to Shell's Rotella Gas Truck.

There's a caveat to my story and yours, my older engine takes a different weight oil, 5W30. Ohh, I see that my friend Gary @Miami-Dade has made recommendations (same engine as you) and I trust his judgement.

SpinBall,
I have a 2017 5.3L and use the Shell Rotella Gas Truck 0-20 (winter) and the same in summer except I add 2 quart 5-30. It probably doesn't make much difference but I pull a large fishing boat around the midwest and feel better about adding the 2 5-30 thinking it helps reduce heat/wear. As Swathdiver stated, very little noise on start-up. The only thing I would bring up is the Rotella Gas Truck oil is now getting very hard to get in my area (Iowa). I also use AC Delco filters which I buy through RockAuto 6 at a time cheaper that way, spreads the shipping.

I change my oil every 3,500, maybe 4,000 at the most. I have had folks tell me I am wasting oil, that the synthetics last much longer, I don't care. I like the idea of keeping fresh oil in my engine.

One other point, there is a website called Bob's The Oil Guy which has some interesting information on the forum regarding motor oil, trans fluid, etc. There are some folks on there who are actual engineers and very knowledgeable about oil make-up, etc.

Hopefully it helps.

I agree, sometimes it can come across a little harsh. I applaud your desire to learn.

I have a 2017 and used the 0-20 dexos oil. If it says Dexos on the bottle, then it meets all the criteria you will need. I think brands are up to what you feel comfortable with. A LOT of oils come from the same plant, in different packaging, and possibly a little different additive recipe.

I personally don't think 0-20 should be in a large v-8, but that's just me. I know the new 6.6L engine in the HD trucks still recommends 5w-30. And after running a company truck 6.0L for 165k, I'll tell you that they use thar weight for a reason.......longevity.

I use a good off brand from RELADYNE, 5w-30 in mine all year long. It's a great quality oil, dexos approved. I just refuse to pay for the advertising label of a name brand.

Hope this helps
