I am sure the camera has a pretty wide angle lens view, but under the handle has a curve, which could make the camera point more up or down than it should.

What does the camera look like and how is it typically mounted?
Pics of the camera would help.

The Garmin version is about an inch square......
It looks like you can mount it different ways.

( Since I have a TomTom, I'll check their version )......Up-date... TomTom doesn't have a backup cam option...
But this is the Garmin photo

If that clip it comes with has enough tension on it to stay put, I might try clipping it onto the bottom lip of the bumper inside the little cubby of the receiver hitch.
I kind of think it may not be springy enough to hold securely. Maybe a custom bracket bent out of sheet metal could be secured in that cubby, held in place by a spot of epoxy putty.

Other options might include:
1) Try to use one of the bolt holes in the clip and use one of the hitch bolts (if bolts will fit - possible drilling out holes to widen more).
2) Zip-tie the clip to the hitch bar, to one side of the receiver. Close enough to center... difference will probably not be noticeable.
3) Make custom bracket and use hitch bolts.

You were concerned about damaging the camera loading and unloading cargo.
I think any of the options above would protect it as much as possible, by getting it under the bumper or inside the cubby inside the hitch.

I am considering a new GPS. It has the option for a back up camera. The most common location suggested is a license frame mount. ..Uh, sorry,.. the camera will get destroyed there. The only location I imagine, that could be a place where the camera is protected is using the wiper 'catch'. Mount to the underside of the plastic 'catch' ? The camera would be sort of protected there.
Any ideas?
The plastic above the rear bumper, under the rear hatch

My thoughts exactly...... That little opening above my hitch will be the spot.....
I am sure I can fabricate something.

I never had an issue on license plate. Had mine there for years.

Otherwise I would delete the rear window snipers and put on hole from it.

Ton or work though as you would have to remove headliner to get video feed and reverse signal to the camera.

I simply ran mine down cable run at door trim on passenger side. Was a cinch. Then out a whole under catch trim.
Ditto! Did much the same as you (05 Tahoe), ran cable to front under door trim, etc.. ‘Wired’ the camera cable to back-up light socket wire on drivers side - easy peasy! Have had the camera lens installed on licence plate for 4 years. Absolutely no problem - correct height and viewing angle. Lens goes out of whack occasionally - no big whoop. Sometimes snow or muddy water will collect on lens if in storm. Otherwise, no probs whatsoever!
